Where would you apply for CS as a Michigan resident with a 1440 SAT, 3.73UW GPA, and $40k/yr budget?

If you were in my shoes where would you apply? SAT is 1440 (720&720), GPA is 4.01W/3.73UW, and my budget is ~40k per year. My intended major is computer science. I’ve already applied to UMich and Michigan State. It seems to me that the OOS schools I have a chance at getting into are either worse are aren’t worth the extra cost when compared to my safety, MSU. Any suggestions?

I agree with you. You’re in a state with very strong public schools. It is questionable that paying another $100K for a private school education would have any net benefits. There are perhaps 2 schools that may be better than UM for CS but I don’t think you’d be admitted. If you do go anywhere else, you’ll be paying for change of scenery.

I know this doesn’t always sit well with people in Michigan, but you may want to consider tOSU as a competitor to MSU. If you can get a National Buckeye scholarship, the cost would be about $30k/year. It looks like tOSU and MSU are in about the same range for CS. Not saying I would pick tOSU over MSU but you are looking for other options in case you don’t get into Michigan. Note: the deadline for National Buckeye is Nov 1st.

How about Case Western? They give merit aid, you might get some.

Think I’d get enough to make CW worth it over MSU?

I think that you are correct. Your in-state schools are superb. Good luck with U.Mich and if you don’t get in there then MSU is a great choice.
