Where You Go is Not Who You'll Be

With UT decisions probably coming out on Friday, I’d like to put on my mom hat and remind all of you of this truth. This is the name of a recent book by Frank Bruni; see reviews here https://mobile.nytimes.com/2015/03/23/books/review-in-where-you-go-is-not-who-youll-be-frank-bruni-examines-college-admissions-mania.html and on texadmissions.com. I have spent 25 or so years in the legal and business worlds, and my observation is that, unless you want to be a Supreme Court justice, there is basically zero correlation between where you go to college and your success in work or happiness in life - both of which depend far more on what you make of the opportunities that you do have. I’ve seen that this is true of my friends in other fields, too, even academia. You all are about to go to college, somewhere! It will one of the most exciting times of your life!! Note that I said exciting, not easy. Wherever you go, jump in with both feet and take advantage of all the wonderful opportunities in front of you. It will be what you make of it.
