Or so I've heard. Do top 20 schools (e.g. Ivies, Northwestern, etc.) take into consideration the college/university you're transferring from? I know a 3.5 GPA for example would mean something totally different in a school like UC Berkeley or Cornell as opposed to a 3.5 GPA from a less academically rigorous school. It wouldn't make sense for transfer admissions not to take that into account, but then again college admissions isn't always all that rational...

Does anyone know if there's any truth to this at all?

A 4.0 anywhere is impressive. Adcoms don’t care if you took the hardest professor or the one that gives all A’s (it’s not like they know who is who, anyway). Just get your GPA up.

that is definitely not true. im sorry to break your bubble, but a 4.0 at a community college or lower tier state school is simply not impressive. especially when you consider the ease of the classes and the level or your peers at these schools

I really hope this is true. Side note to future enterprising would-be transfers: DO NOT take 5th semester Spanish in the fall of your freshman year just because you managed to place into that level and you thought the intermediate class would be too easy…

As sad as it is, it is very true. Some schools specifically state that they prefer students that went to schools similar to theirs (academically, I assume). It’s not to say that it’s impossible to get into these schools - just know that there may be a caveat.

“Preference will be given to students who have been enrolled full-time in college-level coursework at institutions similar to Vanderbilt.”

It is ONE of many academic factors considered, along with your gpa and rigor of coursework. However, I wouldn’t say that it is a LIMITING factor, in the sense that there are many other ways on your application that you can make yourself an outstanding candidate outside of the college you attend.

There are all levels of publics just like there are all levels of private colleges.

I am a community college student who has been offered numerous admissions from great universities such as Cornell University, Columbia GS, Tulane, Case Western, UNC chapel hill, etc.

MODERATOR NOTE: WHILE THIS MEMBER RECEIVED EMAILS CONCERNING PBK SCHOLARSHIPS FROM THE SCHOOLS LISTED ABOVE, THEY NEITHER APPLIED NOR WERE THEY ACCEPTED BY THESE SCHOOLS. THE MEMBER APOLOGIZES FOR THE POSTING FALSE INFORMATION ON THIS BOARD.

Granted I do have a 4.0 with 60+ credits but no matter where you go, just keep your GPA high. Also most UC transfers are CC students.

Bottlecap…I am just curious how you received an admissions decision from both Cornell and Columbia when yopu posted this prior to the early decision results? You could only apply early decision to one school. Could you clarify how this happened when you are still attending your CC?

it really depends on the university. most prestigious universities do expect a higher GPA out of a student who came from a less reputable college. however, i know that UW (Washington) and the UC system treat community colleges just as equally. don’t take my word for anything though.

Yes, but momma-three told bottlecap that “you could only apply early decision to one school,” which seems to imply that there is some sort of ED process for transfers.

i think bottlecap may perhaps be confusing receiving mail/pamphlets from those colleges encouraging him/her to apply with receiving an actual offer of admission.

Here’s the problem, and I’m getting very tired of it: posters like momma-three look at the ‘Latest Posts’ section of CC and see that there is a thread with new posts. HOWEVER, they don’t pay attention to the FORUM that the thread is on.

So in this case, mama-three only saw that someone posted that they got into some schools that had not released ED decisions yet. What she didn’t see was that it was on the TRANSFER forum and was not about fr admissions.

This happened to me in a different thread recently, I gave correct information and then a member came on and said it was wrong–because they were giving information for fr admissions, not transfer.

Everyone here is fine, other members need to be aware of the FORUM before they post nonsense.

Or perhaps “posters like mama-three” looked at the official 2012 transfer admission thread that entomon herself started and saw bottlecap’s post saying he/she ONLY applied to Rutgers. Nobody ever lies on the internetz right?
