Hi! I’m a rising senior who’s interested in applying to a few unis as a law major (in particular, Oxford, Cambridge, KCL,UCL).
Currently I’ve completed the following AP tests:
US Gov: 5
AP Psych: 5
AP US History: 5
AP Euro History: 5
and am enrolled in the following IB courses:
French SL: 6
Math SL
Biology SL
English HL
History HL
Econ HL
I know that most unis don’t have required courses for law, but are there any that you think would add to my transcript?
Thanks for any input!
Well, let me be the first to say it: you can’t apply to both Cambridge & Oxford- you have to pick one. The best prep for reading law is courses that require a lot of reading and writing- b/c essay writing is pretty much what you do.
Have you actually read the course descriptions- in detail - for each of these courses? b/c there are real and material differences. For example, at UCL all first and second year modules (classes) are compulsory; in third year you choose 4 modules from a list of about 20. Passing from year to year is based entirely on the marks from the final exams (in some modules it might be an essay/term paper) done in June. Your (compulsory) first year modules at KCL are Elements of the Law of Contract, Criminal law, Public Law., while at Cambridge they are Civil Law I, Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, Law of Tort and Legal Skills and Methodology. Oxford specifically says that “The Oxford syllabus comprises topics chosen primarily for their intellectual interest, rather than for the frequency with which they arise in practice.” Spend some time getting familiar with them- there is no looking back once you start!
Note that all of them require the LNAT, and you must register by October 15.
