@arabrab That’s what I’m thinking also, it would be difficult to commute and I can’t dorm either because then it’s be too expensive
Hi Hoodie
41079 should be $1079
@Psata82 thank you, I thought that after the 4 years at Hunter I would have to go to another college for a few years and then take the exam, but now I understand it.
For the scholarship, they said that it would be a “group interview” so I guess it would be with other students who also applied for the scholarship.
I might consider attending CCNY for two years, and then transferring to a nursing program. Would I also be able to attend another school, for example St Johns’s, for two years and then transfer to a nursing program?
I will also keep in mind the Sophie Davis PA Program, thank you so much!
Well, there’s no harm in trying to appeal to Stony Brook . . . the worst that’ll happen is they’ll say “no.” And maybe they’ll say “yes”!
just curious, op, what school do you go to.
feel free not to answer if its too personal a statement.
just wondering if i know you, haha, im bored
I don’t see much of a point of paying so much money for SJU though.
I agree you should appeal for Stony Brook. Link them to the transportation connection.
Did you ask anyone if you qualify for the stem program? With your class rank you could get free tuition to suny Stonybrook and then live there. It seems a waste not to take advantage of it.
Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry, Medicinal and Pharmaceutical Chemistry are on the list of approved programs of study. You should be able to fulfill your pharmacy prerequisites in those majors. Then you can apply to a pharm d program. Did you apply to Suny Buffalo? They have a pharmacy program also.
@dodgersmom That’s true, I’ll try to appeal then
@mommdc but pharmacist or nurse aren’t on the list of approved occupations
Hoodie299:
Read what @mommdc said again. Nursing or Pharmacy might not be on the list, but …"Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry, Medicinal and Pharmaceutical Chemistry are on the list of approved " are on the list. So, essentially you can get at least the first two years paid for by STEM if you declare your major to fit one of the approved majors.
I agree, you should appeal Stony Brook Financial Aid award. Something is just not adding up here when you compare your St. John’s University FA award.
Also, if you can get into Hunter’ College Nursing Program in your Sophomore year, that is the optimal approach, as oppose to apply to any of the BSN Programs after 2-years. You might not be aware, but Nursing is very competitive Program to get into in NYC or most States for that matter (not clear to me why this is the case, but it is the reality). I suspect that Hunter gives first preference to their Students over transfers from other Colleges. This might be something you can confirm when you go for your Scholarship Interview (maybe stop by their Nursing School and make inquiry about their Program). But yes, you CAN transfer to one of the other BSN programs (Lehman, SUNY Downstate, Hunter, NYU, etc.) after two years at SJU. In order to apply to these schools, you will have to pay attention to the prerequisites during those two years at another institution so that you meet eligibility requirements to apply to the targeted BSN Programs.
@Psata82 There’s 2 lists, one for approved majors and one for approved occupations. The program requirements says that after getting your degree you have to work in NYS for 5 years, and I want to work as a nurse or pharmacist, but those aren’t one of the approved occupations. I can only choose from the occupations they listed
I think St. John’s offered a better FA award than Stony Brook, but I will still try to appeal.
How would I transfer to Hunter’s Nursing Program in my sophomore year? Wouldn’t I need to spend 2 years at another college first?
Hoodie, can you check your FA award for things that may be written as “Stafford”, “perkins”, “parent PLUS”???
@MYOS1634 it doesnt say stafford or perkins, but it does say parent plus
There is no using the scholarship for the first 2 years as a chem bio medicinal and pharmaceutical major. You must take a job in an approved occupation ( does not include medicine, nursing or pharmacy) work 5 years or the scholarship reverts to a loan which must be repaid with interest
And here we go… It’s a trick some universities use to pretend they offer a financial aid package when in fact they don’t, and that’s how you hear about those student debt horror stories.
Parent Plus isn’t a gift from the university, nor is it financial aid.
It’s their way of telling you your parents will have to pay for your education now AND take on a loan on your behalf. All parents can apply for this loan, regardless of universities (ie., you can take it on for Stony Brook too). if they don’t qualify, you get $4,000 in loans in your name.
@sybbie719 Yes, that’s what I was saying too. I can’t apply for the scholarship because nursing and pharmacy aren’t one of the approved occupations
@MYOS1634 But the parent plus loan isn’t included in the 32k they offered, it was listed separately at the bottom.
Okay, it’s good that they didn’t pretend it was part of the package. (Some universities do!)
Are you part of the Honors Program?
So, you wouldn’t dorm, right, and would only be responsible for ~38k -32K = 6K?
(just checking because it’s an incredibly rare offer)
@MYOS1634 Yes, I was invited to join the Honors Program
I wouldn’t dorm because I live close so yeah, I would be responsible for about 6k
