Irvine, California is one of the safest cities in the country. Therefore, UCI should be safe.

Any city will be safe if you are smart, but if safety still is of great concern, all urban schools will do everything possible to ensure your safety. Considering safety is a good thing, but don't make it be your #1 priority.

Northwestern

I hear there are a lot of muggings at Northwestern, is this true?

You must be thinking of Northeastern.

NYC is the safest big city in the United States, but that doesn't mean its completely safe - especially when you get to the Bronx and parts of Queens and Brooklyn. Manhattan is almost all safe now because its just getting so expensive to live in even the worst and most dangerous parts that the dangerous element moves out.

Aren't you at Northwestern? lol

Northeastern University (NEU) is a major private research university in Boston. It has one of the most attractive urban campuses in the country. The immediate area around the campus is very nice (Museum of Fine Arts, Symphony Hall, Prudential Center).

There is a Northeastern Illionois University in Chicago (NEIU) which is a public commuter school. NEIU has nothing to do with Northeastern in Boston or Northwestern University (NU) which is in Evanston.

haha I think KK and tourguide are having a joke between them ... yes, there have been some muggings on the Northwestern campus but nothing major. Most of the muggings I've heard of were off campus, at 2 in the morning and directed against students walking alone (never a smart thing to do!)

A Dartmouth kid was murdered in Berkeley this year, and I've read numerous reports about attacks on college students in that town.

The eastern part of Evanston has some poorer neighorhoods and so is the north end of Chicago. It's not difficult for muggers from those areas to come to campus . The fact that Northwestern campus and its immediate surroudings, including Evanston downtown, look nice and neat may create false sense of security for some students; they walk alone late at night and become easy targets.

-They also give me something to read about during breakfast. :)

In response to post #30, Berkeley is quite a safe place, I've never had any problems there.

Berkeley has more than its share of pacifists, idealists, gun-control proponents, and vegetarians...easy prey for the criminal element who aren't worried about getting hit over the head with a yoga mat. Contrast that with someone trying to mug a U of Alabama frat boy as he leaves a steakhouse after an NRA meeting.

"Berkeley police are investigating whether the 1:45 a.m. homicide -- Berkeley's second killing this year..."

You can't deny the facts. The murder took place 3 1/2 blocks south of Berkeley's main campus for seemingly no reason.

Just because you didn't hear about it doesn't mean Berkeley is hunky-dory.

Berkeley is a city and every single city is going to have crime. However, Berkeley as a city is a much safer city than other cities. Take for instance Berkeley's neighbor to the south, Oakland. Also, note that it was Berkeley's second killing the year; this is going to sound quite bad, but two killings in a year for an urban area is relatively low (its still two killings too high, but its much lower than other areas).

Each school is required by law to list the campus crime rates. Most sites list the surrounding area as well. Look at the individual college/university web site to help determine campus safety!

Irvine may be one of the most boring communities to live in.

Safety is relative as it only takes getting mugged or having your car/dorm room burgularized ONCE to change your opinion!

In response to the Berkeley homicide, in that particular case the Dartmouth Student was shot by her own friend accidentally.

Those stats aren't accurate. I was surprised to see that Santa Clara U here in Silicon Valley had such a high incident of alcohol related issues, while San Jose State U was relatively low. But we all know that the neighborhood around SJSU is much more dangerous than the one around SCU. I think the SJSU pd just doesn't report everything that happens around SJSU, while the SCU pd overreports !!!
