Which Computer at Pepperdine?

We are looking to get my D a laptop for her H.S. graduation present. We had been leaning to an Apple Powerbook until we went to visit Pepperdine. The university seems to really push the Dell. She is majoring in either English or Economics. Yes, they sell the Powerbook on their website but when you talk to the school it seems to come across as a second class citizen. I personally think the Powerbook is a better made computer but don't want her to be dealing with "ohhh, you have an Apple" for the next 4+ years.

Can any students (or parents) tell me about your experiences using either the Dell or Apple computers at Pepperdine? One advantage to the Dell is it seems to include accident insurance (drop it and they fix it) and I don't believe the Apple does. Also, Dells seem to be repaired/serviced on campus and you need to take your Apple to a service center in town. Do I understand all of this correctly?

btw, she plans on going on to law School and I notice Pepperdine's Law School recommends the Dell??

Thanks

I am a business major at Pepperdine, and it is absolutely required that I have a Dell... all business majors have to. However, my friends who have Macs absolutely love them, and are always bragging about how they never get viruses, etc. Personally, if I wasn't a business major I would definitely get a Powerbook.

Advantage to the Dell... when I came to Pepperdine earlier this year (I'm a freshman) I was excited because I knew if anything happened to my computer it would be fixed right on campus. I have had two different incidents with the computer so far, and one time the computer store had my Dell for 2 weeks, the next time they had it for 5 weeks! It was terrible! Next time I am going off campus even though they do it on campus for free. It's not worth the wait.

So, those are my thoughts. Good luck buying a computer!

My son is sick of all the viruses that he is getting and is quite envious of his classmates with Macs. He just bought a used desk top Mac (to supplement his laptop) and is happy with it.
I hope you get some more feedback from students there. I will ask some of the other kids I know there as well.

Sammy,

I have seen that Pepperdine requires Dell for Business majors. Why? Is it just so everyone has exactly the same thing or is specific software distributed they worry about running on the Macs?

i am a finance and french student at pepperdine and i would recommend everyone purchase an IBM Thinkpad for their college computer. They are built better than Dells and are like bricks. I have the T43, but the T60 just came out and I am considering purchasing it. They are great, and have a fingerprint reader to secure all of your documents and deter theft.

PCs are better for business because they are more friendly to use with excel and other business software. Also, pepperdine requires its business students have windows xp professional.

These IBM Thinkpads aren't sold at the pepperdine computer store though, which is a shame

Or you could get a MacBook Pro, install Boot Camp and run Windows XP with that. That's what I'm planning on doing.

nope, pepperdine does not allow you to run windows on a mac for their business notebook requirement...read the rules

That's odd. My sister is graduating from Pepperdine in a few days and she's been using her Mac throughout her whole time at Pepperdine. She's getting her degree in International Business. On a side note, could you please give me a link to the computer rules? Thanks in advance.

Why Can't I Use a PowerPC-based Apple iBook and PowerBook Notebook Computer?
Our platform requirement is driven by our curriculum. Many of the core applications that the Business Administration Division uses for statistical analysis and simulation are not available for the Apple Macintosh platform. These packages have also been identified as incompatible or unreliable with Windows-on-Mac emulation applications such as VirtualPC. Finally, some professors require homework, assignments, or exams submitted on IBM-formatted floppy disks. Macs no longer ship with floppy drives and not all USB-based floppy drives are compatible with VirtualPC.

this is available at
http://seaver.pepperdine.edu/business/academics/requirements/technology/faq.htm#dell

But the MacBook Pro is not PowerPC-based and Windows XP is not emulated on it if you use Boot Camp. Boot Camp creates a new partition and the Intel processor allows Windows XP to run properly.

The dual boot technology and the Intel chip is new. I suspect that in the future this may cause Pepperdine to be more accepting of the MacBook Pro.

My daughter has decided to go ahead with the Mac. She is a dual major (economics and english).

Hi, I am a business major at pepperdine and currently the University has a policy that they will not "support" Apple computers. I have a macbook pro and xp installed. This does not mean that you can not have a MacBook or MacBook Pro, I used it in all my business classes. I recommend either the Macbook or Macbook Pro as you can have the best of both worlds. All the support means is they can't help you if you have a problem with the computer and you have to remember that is is a full native XP machine, when booted in XP. If anyone has any questions I am very familiar with these computers and the Pepperdine Computer has really good discounts to all students. Like 300 macbook pro and 150 off macbooks! Let me know if you have any questions!

hi rabrown! do you know anything about the advertising major and what they use? also what are the advantages of having a macbook pro vs ibook? thanks!

My D just got her new MacBook Pro. We did not get the windows installed. Should she go tothe web site (apple) and download the bootcamp software or wait and see if we need it first? Not sure why she would care about booting Windows really. I was thinking wait and see. They are, I beleive, creating a new version of the bootcamp software now anyway so waiting again seems to make most sense.

If I was her, I'd wait and see if she really needs it. It is true that Boot Camp is still in its beta stages, however, the final version will only be released when the new OS X comes out.

OK, D has a pc, but we plan on getting a laptop for her this summer for Pepperdine. She is art history/theater so her needs are not as intense as a business major. MAC's are "pricier" any suggestions for a decent laptop. WHat minimum specs should I be looking at?

Hi MeeSh119 sorry I have been traveling home for the summer, so sorry about the long time to reply. But using an apple in advertising would be a smart decision as it is pretty much the dominant force in the advertising world. With all the major high end applications being able to run on mac’s it is the best system pretty much out today. The ibook has been discontinued and since been replaced my the macbook which has an intel chip. The macbook has a 13” screen and a fast processor. The difference between the macbook and macbook pro is you go to a larger screen and a better graphic card, if you plan on using high end programs later in your career, I would plan on using the macbook pro if not the macbook is a perfect choice. If you have any questions please let me know.

Also the discussion with bootcamp, yes it is a beta program. But it does not mean it doesn’t work (I have experience and it is a great machine). You really have the best of both worlds, I use OS X most of the time and the occasional program all you have to do is boot up in xp to run the program desired.

Hi JC I know understand that some people believe that apple computers are more expensive but really that is non true anymore. With the new macbook starting at 1050 it is a really powerful machine for the price and you get so much more than a computer. You have a built in iSight which is a camera so you can even talk to you kids and see there faces online and you do not have to pay for long distance such as a phone call. Also it comes with a complete iLife package which includes iTunes-the best music player, iMove- create your own movies, iDvd-create your own dvd’s just like the movies and so much more. What you get with a mac is so much more than a computer it is a way of life. You don’t need to go searching and buying programs to organize your photos it is all included in the price. Also viruses are a huge thing with 114,000 plaguing the windows world with none on a mac! Also drivers are nonexistent, everything you plug into a apple works such as cameras, printers and external hardrives. There is so much more and I wish I could tell you how much I love these machines but do some research for yourself at http://www.apple.com/getamac/.

Also with apple any problems you have you can take to the genius bar at an official apple store. There are 2 within 12 miles of pepperdine, santa monica is the closest. Also the pepperdine apple campus rep will offer once week training and troubleshooting problems on campus and help your student with any problems or questions they might be facing. Dell does have on campus support but they do take your computer for either a week or two just to fix a problem they will be having. Also a lot of my friends this past year came down with viruses on PC’s and the pepperdine network will remove you from the network until the virus is gone. So can’t connect to the internet until you get the virus off the computer. You take it the service department which can take up to a week to find and delete the virus and sometimes they even delete the entire computer because they can’t find it. With my mac I never went a day without the internet and truly in this day and age we as students rely on it for learning and keeping in touch with our professors.

Let me know if you have any questions. Also the computer store is not selling computers anymore so I recommend getting them before you come to NSO. You can still receive your discount just go to the webpage bellow for pepperdine and apple. Also do not buy Microsoft word as the computer store sells it for only $29 with a student ID, don’t pay $ 200 for it! Thanks I hope this is helpful.

Also any students looking for an ipod also! It is your lucky day! With a purchase of any new macbook, macbook pro, imac, you get a free ipod nano! You must be students and buy the computer at the same time with the ipod to receive the rebate. It also can be used for ipod videos but you will get a $179 rebate and pay for the rest. Let me know if anyone has any questions.

*You must buy it at an apple store(show proof of attendance) or online apple store, or campus computer store.

thank you so much! youve been really helpful!
