Which foreign language should I take in college?

I am planning on majoring in pre-neuroscience and I can't decide which language is better. I already took Spanish in high school and I remember some of it. Thank you for your help!

I assume you’ve had your share of Latin as well if you are planning pre-med? D is wondering what she should take too and she’ll be majoring either biochem or neuroscience and is fluent Spanish and four years of Latin…good question.

If you know enough Spanish to place into a higher level course than the beginner one, then you can complete the foreign language requirement, or reach the desired level of fluency, in fewer courses than if you start a new language from the beginning. Of course, whether Spanish is the most useful language for your goals depends on your goals.

If you just want to finish your language requirement, place into a higher level Spanish course, take the last one or two classes you’d need for the credit, and you’re done.

If you want to take a new language, something fun and challenging is Chinese. Assuming your goal is eventually to work with patients, Chinese will be pretty useful in addition to Spanish, as would something like Russian.

If you’re not strong in languages and want something simpler, or are worried a really challenging language would interfere with your neuro coursework, French is really similar to Spanish (I placed into a higher level Spanish course at my uni even though I’d only taken one class in HS because of 4+ years of French behind me) and still useful!
