So I'm a chemistry major going into premed. I've heard that GE clusters help you get rid of your GE's much faster so I'm probably going to take one this fall quarter. Which one would you say is worthwhile?

GE clusters, in the opinion of this chemistry student, are optimized for you if you take the cluster that knocks out your most needed GE requirements. For example, don’t take a science cluster since your major classes will fulfill the science GE requirements. Instead, pick one least related to your major–look at what requirements the cluster fulfills and make sure you won’t already be fulfilling those requirements with classes for your major/career track/intellectual interest. Otherwise, there’s a huge opportunity cost.

In my experience, nobody ever says “My favorite class(es) was my GE cluster!” It’s supposedly time consuming, possibly boring, and inflexible since you have to schedule your entire first year around those courses to receive the full benefits.

I generally didn’t hear much about GE clusters other than how much work they were. That said, if you take the GE cluster route (actually not that popular in my personal assessment), take one that you are interested in, or else the entire year will be a drag.

It seems to me like they added a lot more choices for GE Clusters, but took at least one away (Rock n’ Roll).

Taking a GE Cluster basically concentrates all of your GEs, making it feel faster. There’s no problem spreading out GE courses over a few quarters and retain flexibility. I have no problem recommending not taking a GE Cluster.

Thank you so much for the advice!!! And yeah, I’m still debating whether to take a GE Cluster because I’ve heard mostly negative reviews regarding that.

I’ll be honest and say I’m a member of the “negative” reviews. In my opinion and experience, I felt like all the work being put in was way more than the 4 GEs I would have gotten out of it (didn’t complete it). I think dropping it was the best decision for me so I could focus more on some major classes and take some of the “easier” GEs or take more interesting ones instead of staying within a subject the whole year. If I had stayed with it, I wouldn’t be as far along in my major. But that being said, I still need 5 GEs. So it’s up to you, but I really didn’t enjoy my time there. Just my 2 cents.
