Which GPA scale is used for awarding merit scholarships

@GeorgiaMom50 , yes, those are the worth of grades at UAH once students begin college.

@UAHAdmissions, I just realized that you must have your minuses and regular letter grades mixed up in the post above. Your A- and A, B- and B, and C- and C are reversed. I guess the most important number I’m looking for clarification on is this: What is the GPA number grade required to maintain merit scholarships? 83?

I apologize for the mix up in pluses and minuses! Here is is corrected:

A+ 97-100 4.0
A 93-96 4.0
A- 90-92 3.7
B+ 87-89 3.3
B 83-86 3.0
B- 80-82 2.7
C+ 77-79 2.3
C 73-76 2.0
C- 70-72 1.7
D+ 67-69 1.3
D 65-66 1.0
E/F Below 65 0.0

This conversion scale is for Freshmen entering college. It is the scale we use when we need to convert high school GPAs from a 100 point scale to a 4.0 scale to make admission decisions.

Once students are here in classes, they need only maintain a 3.0 GPA ( a ‘B’ average, any grade between 80-89 in their classes) to keep their scholarships.

@UAHAdmissions, yes, that clears up my question. Thank you!

I received an email that was very clear. Uah will accept a weighted or unweighted gpa. “Whichever is higher”.

Their website basically says they will accept whatever gpa and test score you have up to august 1st of your entering year. So if you plan to ENTER the fall of 2016. Your final gpa/test scores as of August 1st 2016 will do. It’s a terrific policy.

Yes. The exception is if your school uses something other than a 4.0 scale. We’re looking at Fall 2017.

hello @UAHAdmissions

At the moment, my son qualifies for the Charger Excellence merit scholarship.

Would he also be eligible for any competitive scholarships to cover additional costs such as meal plan, books and supplies?

Are UAH total scholarship awards capped at total cost of attendance or can they exceed it?

Is there one application that can be used for all the available competitive scholarships or would he have to apply for each one individually?

Thank you for your help.

@Wien2NC , The competitive scholarship application is open to all admitted students. Once your student gets accepted to UAH, they can fill out the one-time application for competitive scholarships (due Dec. 1, 2016). These particular scholarships range in coverage, and there are over 250 of them available. Applying the one time puts your student into the pool of the 250+. The scholarships are not capped at total cost of attendance.

@UAHAdmissions

wow. that’s fantastic. can we apply now for Fall 2017 admission?

@Wien2NC, the Fall 2017 application is open now. All Fall 2017 applications will begin to be processed in August 2016. After the application is completed, be sure to send us your ACT/SAT scores and high school transcript! Once these are received, an admissions decision will be made and you will be notified by mail!

@UAHAdmissions

if I earn a $2000 private scholarship meant for tuition, and I also earn the Charger Distinction scholarship, for example, will I be able to use that $2000 for something else, like housing?

@sebrown21, Yes! If you any balance remaining after what your merit scholarship covers, you may use any outside scholarships towards the remaining balance, such as housing or meal plan.

Could someone elaborate on the GPA that UAH considers for the full scholarship? Is it the highest GPA earned for a semester and during only 12th grade? I am new

Hopefully, @UAHAdmissions will answer this accurately. In the meantime, it’s my understanding that they use the highest GPA listed on your transcript at the end of your Junior year. If your GPA increases in Senior year, they will honor that. By ‘highest,’ I mean that if your high school lists both unweighted and weighted GPA, UAH will use the weighted. The exception would be if your high school does not use a 4.0 scale. Please don’t take this as accurate fact until @UAHAdmissions confirms it.

@Stayconnected19 , @GeorgiaMom50 is correct! UAH Admissions first considers the highest GPA at the end of the junior year, but will honor any increases that occur during the senior year. We look at whatever GPA is listed on the transcript. If your high school weights GPA, it has to be reported on the transcript for us to take it!

@GeorgiaMom50, @UAHAdmissions, thank you for your responses. Are you referring to the overall GPA earned from grades 9,10 and 11 on the transcript or the highest GPA earned in one school year by the end of junior year?

Grades 9 through 11 together.

Got it! Thank you so much
