Which GPA scale is used for awarding merit scholarships

Just wondering if anyone knows if UAH uses weighted or unweighted gpa for determining merit awards. Also, do they look only at grades 9-11 or do they include 12th?

They told us “weighted.” But it has to come from your school. If your school doesn’t weight, they won’t calculate Honors or AP classes as 5 points for an A or anything.

As I understand it, the scholarship awarded will be the highest you qualify for at one week before class starts.

For example, if you got all A’s second semester senior year and retook the ACT after you graduated school, but before you actually enrolled, and that combination qualified you for a higher scholarship, you’d get it. But they have to have the info some number of days before class starts (they need it Aug 1 or something?).

It may sound a little confusing, but it’s as straightforward as they come.

Great–thanks for the detailed answer, 50N40W! Interesting policy re: 12th year grades. Do you know if they are going to change the SAT score requirements for merit to correspond with the new test?

No idea how the new SAT will be handled. UAH Admissions is usually pretty quick to respond to these things, I’d be surprised if they didn’t show up with some info or a link soon. Probably worth contacting them in any event. So far I’ve found them to be prompt, clear, and accurate. I like those things

So if a student were eligible for the scholarship when they applied, but their GPA dropped over senior year below the scholarship threshold, would they then lose it?

@UAHAdmissions is a better source of that detail than me. I don’t remember if that came up in our visits.

I’m hoping that UAHAdmissions comes back soon  . I’d like to figure out their method so that I can recalculate DSs GPA to be sure he’ll be eligible for UAH’s merit scholarships, before he applies.

@Zekesima , In light of the new SAT, UAH will be utilizing a conversion chart for the new scores. Things have not yet been completely finalized, but a public announcement will be made soon on our site!

@mdcmom, if your student has previously qualified for one of our scholarships, they will receive the scholarship. We consider the highest GPA and test scores!

@UAHAdmissions, for scholarships, is the GPA calculated on the entire transcript, or core courses?

@mdcmom, Scholarships are awarded based on the GPA listed on the transcript. In essence, what (and how) the high school calculates the GPA is what we record and use to make scholarship offers.

@UAHAdmissions Thanks so much for hanging out here and answering our questions!

@UAHAdmissions, has this policy changed in the last week? We were told in our campus tour today that UAH uses unweighted. If so, does UAH add any weights at all for honors, AP, IB, or dual enrollment classes?

@GeorgiaMom50 , We apologize for any confusion you may have encountered! We accept whatever GPA is on the student’s transcript, calculated by the high school. We do not do any recalculating of GPAs if the high school does not place weights on the classes for AP, IB or Dual Enrollment.

@UAHAdmissions One other question: I know you said you were adjusting for the new SAT, but will merit thresholds remain the same for ACT for the coming year?

@NerdMom88, Yes, since the ACT has not changed, our ACT requirements will stay the same for the merit tuition scholarships.

Thanks @UAHAdmissions! I know some other schools are taking the opportunity of re-doing the SAT scale to tighten the requirements for automatic merit. Just wanted to check in with UAH.

@UAHAdmissions Hello. Can you tell me how you handle transcripts from high schools that grade on a numerical scale (100)?

@planner03, we convert the numerical scale to a 4.0 scale as follows:

A+ 97-100 4.0
A- 93-96 4.0
A 90-92 3.7
B+ 87-89 3.3
B- 83-86 3.0
B 80-82 2.7
C+ 77-79 2.3
C- 73-76 2.0
C 70-72 1.7
D+ 67-69 1.3
D 65-66 1.0
E/F Below 65 0.0

We hope you find this useful!

@UAHAdmissions,
Is this the scale used for UAH students when they are in college? We are accustomed to
90-100 = A or 4.0
80 - 89 = B or 3.0
…and so on.
