I'm currently a Junior living in CA. I'm planning to do a research internship related to biology or physics from this year. But since I'm going to join in a summer program such as mathcamp or Ross Mathematics Program in the next summer, I cannot spend the summer for internship. So, I'm going to do a personal research internship with a professor of a local university or of Stanford University during the school year. Which internship do you recommend me to do, one with the local university professor, or one with a Stanford professor?

Actually, I neither know how to successfully contact with professors nor how much academic knowledge is required. Could you give me some advice for doing well in such a research internship. Do I need to understand general relativity if I'd like to research about some advanced topics of theoretical modern physics?

1) Obtain internship. To obtain internship, you’ll need to learn about the professor’s research, gain interest in it and talk to the professor. During conversation, ask about potential research opportunities and their research in general. Perhaps look at previous literature in his/her field of study. Then if sincerely interested, apply.

2) If you have multiple offers, choose based on your thoughts on step 1. What do you think will help you more in the longer run?

I checked some researches of the universities. I was really interested in applied physics and particle physics since I have some knowledge of modern physics, especially analytic physics. I will contact with professors by following your advice. But I have one question. Stanford is about 300 miles away from my home. Should I choose the neighbor university?

Apply to both at first since they’re both possibilities. Perhaps if you find that its too far, then you can have the option to go to your local uni but can’t hurt to go for both. I can’t say for you if its too far.

I see. That’s the best way that I can.
If the distance between my home and the university doesn’t much matter, it will be the best for me.
Thanks so much for your advice!
I have no question anymore :)

Hi worry, I just wonder how can you do a personal internship while 300 miles away during the school year. I cannot figure out how you can commute to the school that far away.
