Which is a bigger partier school, Cornell or Binghamton?

I am currently a student at Binghamton and am not too happy with the huge party and bar scene as well as the huge frat and sorority presence. I just finished my freshman year and am considering applying to transfer to Cornell in the Spring but I was curious to know if that school is any better.

Hi. I just finished freshman year at Binghamton, too, and I’m not a partier at all. Everyone I know at Cornell seems to say that there’s a huge frat/drinking presence there as well. Honestly, if there’s a difference, I don’t think it’s that big. I live in Newing so basically everyone around me was pregaming all the time and I was really miserable at first, but eventually I branched out and found that I definitely wasn’t the only person who wasn’t so into the party scene. I really hope you can find that, too. On the other hand, Cornell is still a great school and transferring isn’t a terrible option, but I wouldn’t do it if your only reason is to escape the frat scene.

I go to Cornell. Cornell definitely has a big party scene, and greek-life is very significant as well. However, partying/drinking is a big deal at almost any college, and there’s no escaping it. As for Cornell specifically, there are TONS of opportunities/events going on every friday/saturday night besides drinking/parties, so it certainly doesn’t dominate the social scene here.

Binghamton probably has more inclusive parties, but the Greek system at Cornell is definitely bigger and has a decent presence on campus. It’s a bit more of a thing here with the long campus histories of most houses as well as the money around them.

Rebeccar:
- I live in Newing too and I guess that’s why I am having a difficult time with the whole party scene. We seem pretty similar. What do you typically do on the weekends? It would be great if we can meet up at school in the fall.

What type of events go on at Cornell on the weekends that people attend other than parties?

There tends to be cultural events, concerts, and hordes of other stuff that goes on sometimes. Typically, people and groups advertise those all around campus (chalking, flyers, etc.). I can’t really help you much more since I’m on the partying side of the spectrum, but that’s the best I can think of.

Definitely! If you want to PM me maybe we can find each other on Facebook or something. I’m actually Jewish and discovered Chabad pretty early on-- if you go to Binghamton there’s like a 35% chance that you’re Jewish too-- but anyway they have huge dinners every Friday night from like 7-10pm and it’s really friendly and welcoming and a lot of people aren’t even that religious. After dinner, a bunch of people walk to Hayes (the off campus apartments next to University Plaza) to hang out. Saturday differs; sometimes Late Nite actually has pretty good events, sometimes just staying in and watching a movie with some friends, blah blah. I’ve been to a frat three times. I didn’t really think it was fun any of those times, haha. I’m definitely trying to expand a little bit because I feel like I spend way too many nights holed up in my room watching a movie with my boyfriend.

Rebecca:
That would be great if we could meet. I am jewish too and have gone to chabad and hillel before but I dont always have people to go with but I would love to go more often. Are you in the Binghamton Class of 2015 facebook group? I can look you up there.

Yup I’m in the Facebook group! If you search Rebecca R I think I’m the only Rebecca whose last name starts with R. My profile picture is me with my boyfriend in the old union. Haha if you can’t find me or aren’t sure if you have the right person, I can send you a private message here with my full last name.
