(ok this is my first post ever on this site, so... yeah)
anyways, I'm getting a laptop for HS graduation, even though that was 3 weeks ago. (we're waiting for the mac os x lion and stuff next month) I'm about 99.9% sure i want a mac laptop (we had PCs my whole life until about 2 or so years ago and we got one of those huge imacs so i decided i like them better because they're not slow, and i've become spoiled by the massive screen...) but I'm not sure which kind is best. like i said, I'm used to the big screens, but one of my friends is in the same situation as me, and thinks she wants a macbook pro just because she can get it 15 inches. (oh. i just do internet, email, lots of music, pics, movies, word, powerpoint, excel, sometimes garageband...) i've heard that the pro is "a lot of computer" i probably wouldn't use, but when i looked up specifications, it said the macbook air only has 128GB of memory. when you add up all my music, pictures, and video, not to mention actual homework stuff, i already have more than that (i'm pretty sure. there's no easy way on my computer how to tell how much total memory i'm using...but i'm sure its more than 128gb. i have a lot of music.) i probably will use my laptop for everything, since i'm not going to be living at home. so what kind should i get??? pros and cons!!!!

The Macbook Air has 128GB of hard disk space, not memory. You can easily tell how much disk space you’re using by doing the following:

Windows: open up My Computer, right click on the C: drive, select “Properties”, and look at the amount of disk space used.

Mac OS X: go to hardware settings and view usage.

128GB disk space is actually plenty. If you run out, just buy an external hard drive.

I just went and checked my sons laptop, he is a pretty typical college student IMO. Between music files, games and God knows what else, he has 379GB
(on a 500GB HDD) I am not sure he knows where the control panel is.

excelblue: i’m kind of new to figuring out how computers work, so i feel kind of dumb when i ask what the difference is between hard disk space and memory, but i am asking…
also, i couldn’t find hardware settings, but i’ll keep looking. if anything, i can google it :)

Your computer employs two types of ‘storage’ - RAM or Random Access Memory and its Hard Drive. RAM is temporary storage for the Operating System and any Applications you may be using. RAM holds the data in place only while the computer is powered on. The Hard Drive stores all the applications and data on your computer for use and retrieval whether powered-up or not.
-More RAM allows computer and programs to run faster
-Larger Hard drive allows you to store more files (Music, videos, applications etc)

Hard drive space;
-Select your hard drive’s icon from the Finder. This is typically “Macintosh HD.”
-Press “Command” and “I” from your keyboard. The “Get Info” window opens.
-Click the drill-down arrow next to “General.” Read the data next to “Available,” which is the free space that remains on you hard drive.

gojack: thanks! ok, i do have a lot less than i originally thought…i think…but it’s still more than 128GB…and i have figured out the difference between RAM and actual memory (haha yahoo answers) thanks!!
