My current major is BS computer science and I’m deciding to change it to BA and declare a minor. I’ve narrowed it down between business administration or information and computer technology. I feel like the information and computer technology minor would complement my major well and make me better well rounded. The business administration minor would flow into my future plan of one day running my own businesses (late 40’s or 50’s). I’m not so sure what else I could do with a business administration or information and computer tech minor. Any advice?
IT will be essentially CS lite at many places - make sure your program actually would be valuable to you at your school. Additionally, I don’t see that as making you any more well rounded, if that is your goal.
If you are looking to eventually run a business, business administration seems like the obvious choice.
Personally, if it was not simply between the two, I would recommend this:
Forget about the formal minor - what matters are the classes and which are useful - take classes in subjects you would actually find beneficial, not just what a formal minor would require. This may lead you to essentially “minor” in both, or perhaps other subjects that would both interest you and be useful.
If you have the time you could try and take the first required course for each minor to see which you prefer more. I say this because in my opinion a person should pursue a career in something they are passionate about. As such you should shape your education around what you like to study. I think that by switching to the BA path you understand this at least a little bit.
However, in the long run you would probably learn more valuable skills in the ICT minor. A lot of stuff required to successfully manage a business is learned outside the classroom.
But that’s just my perspective.
