Hey!! I have a small problem and was wondering if you guys could help me out. I like both engineering and economics and the thing is that I am not sure which intended major I should state in my application essays. On top of that some colleges want a specific essay on your intended major also (like Cornell). Thirdly I am not sure which one I will opt for in college and I might have to change. Can you please tell me which one of the colleges below are flexible enough to allow you to change your major from eco to eng or vice versa in first year??? I don't want to double major I think. I know Cornell asks you to apply to one of its specific colleges in the application essay and then you have to write an essay on it as well. So you can see the problem...

I can’t answer for every school, though I imagine it works like this: everywhere you can change, however, at schools where you apply separately to an actual major/college, it will be harder to change.

Brown, for instance, has no such internal structure. The entirety of Brown is available to everyone there regardless of what they applied as. In fact, whatever you put on your application is really just about context, once you show up, that information is in the garbage and you’re not concentrating in anything until you declare at the end of your second year. Even then, changing concentrations is as easy as filling out a one page form to drop your former one and a three page form to pick up a new one.

Duke allows you for sure. In fact, I know people that switched into or out of engineering in their 5 semester. Obviously, doing it earlier is preferable, and most people do so. In addition, I know you said that you didn’t want to do so, but if you can bear it, engineering and economics together is actually a pretty popular double major.

Wash U does for sure! I’ve heard of many students changing their school (Engineering, Business, Arts & Sciences, etc) during and after their first year. My son wasn’t sure he wanted A&S or Business. He applied to A&S and was admitted and decided during the summer before school started that he wanted to switch to Business. It was incredibly easy – he e-mailed the Admissions Director who responded the same day that it was done and he received a confirming letter in the mail 3 days later. I understand it’s just as easy to change thereafter (although I think it involves a signature by someone --either the advisor or dean).
