Which of these WA schools

for a math major

Son is applying to some reachs and "possible" schools in other states, like MIT, and Caltech (reaches) and Rose-Hulman, Rennselaer, and WPI (probable/possibles) but needs to have a safety or two near home - in this case WA state public Universities. He does not want a place as large as UW, so he is looking at Western, Eastern, WaSU, and Central. (yup there is a State funded U in every corner of the state!) We don't really want to apply to all of them but would choose one or two with the best Math Departments.

So you WA students or parents who have gone through this, please give me your opinions on the school with the better math department. thanks

PS Son has a 4.0 in math througout HS and scored an 800 on his Math SAT. He wants to go into graduate work in math.

Generally speaking, Western is by far the best of the bunch (I know nothing about their math students), and lots of students turn down UW for Western, among other reasons so that they can finish in four years (it has become VERY difficult to do that at UW these days).

It is a very beautiful school in a really nice location, and with access to both Seattle and Vancouver.
