Which school and which major?

Hi everyone!

I got accepted at temple university for computer science and at University of Hartford for computer engineering. However, I feel very undecided between the two schools since the cost is very negligible and I’m not sure as to whether to major CS or CE for my undergrad. My career plan is to become a software engineer and I hope to go to a good grad school for either CS or CE. But I’m not sure whether to do CE in undergrad and CS at grad or vice versa.

My 3rd option is to do the 3+2 engineering program through Washington & Jefferson and Columbia university, but I’m afraid that 3 years at W&J will severely limit opportunities for internship and research.

I know that Temple University has a huge alumni network but I’m not so sure if their CS/Engineering department is “good”. For University of Hartford, I heard that their 2 year program brings down the schools ranking/reputation but besides that it is an academically strong school.

Any input to help me make a decision on either the college choices or the majors will be appreciated.

Thank you!

I don’t know either of those schools, so I won’t be of any use there. I can say though, skip the 3/2 route. Use the search function and you find many threads that go into the details of why.

Have you visited both?

If you want to do software engineering, CS is usually going to be a better route. CompE does do software, but they don’t have the breadth in the field that CS does. Compare the course offerings in the two and see what looks most interesting.

Also, pay attention to the way Temple handles CS - at some schools it really is a software engineering degree, in others it is an applied math degree focusing on how math is handled in computers.
