Hello! In my city there is a new college prep school opening. My parents are trying to decide if I should go to that school, or the local public school. At the college prep school I can take more AP courses, and have a definite math class my senior year, however the public school has more extra curricular activities, which school would look better to college admissions officers, or would it really matter?

if u do well in the prep school generally that would look better but many times when kids switch they don't succeed. i went through thinking about this last year i chose the prep school.

also it depends on what type of prep school a 'famous'prep for children of the wealthy or academically gifted prep for itelligent children. if it was the first i'd go for the public because those schools just show that u have money. if it was the second kind i'd go for the prep because its just a great honor and many times colleges look at prep applicants as well prepared because its like mini college before college.

check your board on the Columbia forum, I responded (and then posted again to add something), abnd so did someone else

hm... usually one of the advantages (in terms of college admissions at least) of prep schools is that the school is relatively well-known among the top colleges and they know if you're coming from that school generally you are well prepared for college level work. but since this school is new, a.) you can't really see what kind of colleges the kids get into, avg SAT scores, etc. and b.) colleges most likely won't know of it

i definitely wouldn't go to the public school just because more ECs are available, because at most schools you can start up your own clubs or w/e if you want. also it will probably be easier to make sports teams at the new prep school (unless the public school is really small/the teams are really bad).

so basically, if you're sure the academics will be better at the prep school or you'll have more opportunities, i'd definitely go there

not all prep schools r for either i go to sped school and its a college prep! LOLz it shows u could be a 'tard and still go to prep school half the kids r tards...and im one of the normal kids

I go to a school that's similar. I know that since the school has fewer ECs they let their students do their ECs at their public school.

I probably would go to the public school. Plenty of kids are accepted to good colleges from public schools. But then again the prep school could be better academically. It is a hard call because it is new. For the prep school don't you have to apply? What grade are you in now?

when a prep school first opens its generally not hard to get in the risk is that not all prep schools end up good. for example in my city there are three. the one i go to which is for gifted kids and the kids aren't snobby, there is another for gifted but the kids are snobby, then there is a third one where u don't need to be smart just pay 13,000 a year and u can go. if u want to take the risk of it not being a good school go for it because this will be the easiest year to get in.
