I'm very interested in an area studies program, specifically in South Asian Studies, Southeast Asian Studies, Middle Eastern Studies, and Eastern European/Slavic Studies, in that order. As such, I would really like the college I choose to at least have good programs in Hindi/Urdu and Arabic. I don't have a whole lot of hope for Indonesian, Burmese, or Javanese, but I think that learning a minimum of two new languages is necessary. I currently am, compared to other Texas German 3 students, pretty decent at German, but that's only because our school doesn't offer anything more interesting. I will study abroad at least once throughout college, hopefully to India or Pakistan. Currently, my top pick for a school is Dartmouth, which offers Arabic and Russian, and especially well developed study abroad programs to Russia (great study abroad programs in general, to many places, at Dartmouth), and I suppose I could take Arabic, Russian, and Middle Eastern or Slavic studies, and study abroad to India to learn a language there, but I would be unconfident in my ability to pick up a language entirely without a classroom setting. Btw, I outright cannot self study. I've tried and failed many times. What would you recommend I do by way of Dartmouth, or which other schools would offer better programs for me in these areas? Thanks!
