Which Schools Should I Apply to?

I was thinking by applying to UW normally I would have a safety. If I apply honors and get rejected do I not get in at all? Are there any schools other than UW which are low matches/ safeties for me with good CS programs. So far I’m thinking:

Definite Reach: MIT, Stanford, Cal Tech
Reaches/High Matches: Carnegie Mellon, Harvey Mudd
Matches: UC Berkeley, UCLA (but with a less likely outcome)
Safeties/low matches: UCSD, UC Irvine, Univ of Washington

I would appreciate someone adding to low match category, as it would provide depth. Also, where does Cornell place on this list?

bummpp…

Anyone else have anything to say?

Again, UIUC… all though kind of far from the west coast…

I am considering UIUC but it seems like a low match(my SATs are higher than their 75th percentile and they accept 69% of applicants) AND it’s really far AND it’s gonna cost $40,000/year

So I was hoping there would be similar schools(far away) which would be higher matches(and with good CS programs) that I could consider…

Apply to San Jose State as a safety.

Check what I found with a cool google search.

You should do some research too! I bet you could find more good stuff.

Look into that too.

It seems like you have a pretty good self-assessment whether you could get into any of these schools – go with that rather than others opinions.

popnpoper, Thank you soo much man!! Cross referencing those universities with college board stats should give me a reaallly good idea. And I always believe third person opinions are always much more objective and helpful.

UCBChemEGrad: Yeah thanks man but I think instead of SJSU, Cal Poly SLO or UC Irvine would serve as good safeties…SJSU just seems too “community college-ish”

Look at Purdue. While SJSU is rather “community college-ish”, they have a good CS program. If you’re willing to consider Canada, definitely check out the University of Waterloo.

noimagination, Purdue is an interesting suggestion as I have never heard of it as a well-reputed CS school…I may well be wrong but is it a good CS school? And no…I don’t think Canada is in consideration, haha I didn’t think that would come up.

^ Too cold? Waterloo is one of the best CS schools on the planet…

While it isn’t as good as their engineering programs, Purdue does have a decent CS department.

No it’s more of a cultural thing getting your education in Canada…I’d just rather stay in the states, no offense to anyone. I will be sure to look into Purdue, do you know how I stack up with it?

^ Purdue has fairly easy admissions. Their engineering (and to a lesser extent science) programs are top-notch and therefore more competitive.

Oh ok…thanks man. Does anyone know how competitive Univ of Washington(Dep of CS and Engineering) is for out of state students??

^ Harder than for in-state. I think you’d get in, but it’s not a safety.

noimagination, or anyone else for that matter, do you know how their CS system works? Like I heard they admit very few people into it…how are those stats?
