Which Vocab list did the best?

RahoulVA - thx for suggesting the SuperKids vocabulary list (see post 33). I have spent some time evaluating it. The Superkids list contains 1120 Vocabulary words divided into 28 groups of 40 words. Each group corresponds to a day. Each word is accompanied by a definition. There are no illustrative sentences. The Superkids list performed quite well. Its 1120 words generated 13 hits tying it with Direct Hits Vocabulary for first place in the total number of hits. Superkid hits included the following words: ameliorate, exacerbate, remunerate, abstemious, obstinate, obstreperous, iconoclast, nuance, vitriolic, pragmatic, coherent, enigmatic, and paradox.

I used Princeton Review’s HP and Barron’s 2400’s. They were okay, they generated about 4-5 hits, I’d say.

Abstemious
parity
obstinate
olfactory
excerbate

No, it is the big word list they have on their website. That list has around 2000 words on it. I just skimmed through and saw quite some hits there.

I did barron’s vocabulary. It’s really helpful.

Littlebell (great name!) you are right - the TestMaster’s Big List is in fact a very big list. Thx for the link. The TestMaster’s Big List contains 2189 words. The words are listed in alphabetical order. Each word is briefly defined. There are no examples or illustrative sentences. The Big List generated the following 13 hits: ameliorate, exacerbate, remunerate, abstemious, obstinate, olfactory, iconoclast, vitriolic, synthesizer (Big List has synthesis but I counted it - close enough), pragmatic, enigmatic, edify, and paradox.
So as of now, The TestMaster’s Big List (2189 words/13 hits), SuperKids (1120 word/13 hits) and Direct Hits Vocabulary (365 words/13 hits) are all tied with 13 hits. I hope to review PR’s Word Smart and Barron’s 2400 shortly. Will be very interesting to see how they performed on the June SAT.

Dropped by Border’s yesterday to check out books. Took a look at REA’s SAT book. They have a list of 600 words that are supposedly “the most frequently tested words on the SAT.” NOT! The REA list of 600 words generated the following 7 hits: ameliorate, obstinate, skepticism, pragmatic, coherent, enigmatic and painstaking. It is interesting to note that the REA list completely missed the key level 4 and 5 words on the June SAT - ie abstemious, obstreperous, iconoclast, nuance, parity, vitriolic. (REA was a dud but the cafe had great iced mocha and their sofa chairs were great!)
