Which Vocab list performed best on the 08 PSATs?

By popular request here are some more of the Kaplan words you will not see on the November SAT: palimpsest. pathogenic, peculate, peregrinate, rostrum, seraphic, and zephyr.

I am done with my SATs but this thread caught my eye and after reading through helped me confirm my believe of how STUPID SAT s are. How well you can memorize vocab is not what the SAT was built to do. I also read an anti college board article where they attack this new test prep industry created by Collegeboard's tests and how SAT scores have lost steam and credibility with colleges. I do believe we need a national measure for colleges however i also believe a better system than the SAT can be achieved.

Sorry Back on Topic: Damm i never used the DH list, I wish i would have. I had to use Princeton review didnt help much :(

^ Like you I am done with the SAT. I'm ambivalent about the test. What does it measure? I don't know for sure. Is it important? Yes, because colleges need a common way to measure applicants. Now let me be pragmatic. Students hoping to score above a 600 on CR will have to have a strong vocabulary. My sister loves Direct Hits. I took a look. It is really not a list at all. Each word comes with a clever example. For example, DH illustrated SUPERCILIOUS by saying: "What do Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter SAGA and Cal in the movie "Titanic" have in common? Both demonstrated a SUPERCILIOUS attitude toward their so-called inferiors. Lucius Malfoy demonstrated a SUPERCILIOUS attitude toward Harry Potter and other "mudbloods" who were born of one "pureblood" parent and one Muggle parent. Cal demonstrated a SUPERCILIOUS attitude toward Jack and other third-class passengers in steerage." No wonder my sister remembered SUPERCILIOUS when it appeared on the Wed PSAT.

alleviate, lucid, unencumbered, demagogue, effusive, supercilious, belie, deft, paragon, frugality, futile, audacity, plasticity

The emboldened words are ones that you should know anyway...like seriously...I can understand if you don't know the words in normal format though...

dark knight, or some1 else

can u plz pm me some info about Testmaster's?
NO idea wat it is

^Testmasters is a test prep company located in Texas. You can visit their website at Test Masters Official Website To the best of my knowledge their vocabulary list is not for sale. I got my copy from a friend who took the course. It is just two pages long - 254 words and brief definitions. You can buy a book titled Complete Solutions to the College Board's Official SAT Study Guide that is very good. Hope this helps.

hmmm... the list with less than 400 words had the same amount of hits as the list with 3500 words :(

From the vocab list, it seems to me that the Wed PSAT had easier words. Maybe it's just me

^I agree...but gerrymander and anathema were very difficult.

I thought most of the PSAT words were hard. Most of my friends only knew a few of the words. The CC scores are amazing. I've got to study more.

^ yes 10 char

Ok, if I feel I did well on the PSAT should I think about taking the Nov. or Dec. SAT or should I get some of the books and do more prep work? My friends told me you can improve your score by taking the test a bunch of times.

I have a question about your analysis dark night.

when you say Direct Hits are you referring to Volume 1, Volume 2, or both volumes together?

^both volumes.

^ My analysis is based upon the words in both volumes.

You can preview the books on Amazon to see if you think they'd be helpful. I think I will get them for my kids....

I just received the Direct Hits books today. I like the fact that they are the size that can be easily be taken along in a book bag or sports bag. My son travels a lot with sports and can look at them when he has down time on the road. We have the Rocket Review and College Board books but they are too big to lug around. I have enjoyed reading the creative examples in the Direct Hits books, hopefully my son will too!! I am going to show him how many hits were on the PSAT.
