Which would you choose?

many firms in the east coast make two stops in the west
1. Stanford
2. Haas

UCB Haas> UCB Econ> UCLA Biz Econ> USC buusiness. Berkeley is sooooo much more prestigious than USC and UCLA, especially if you choose to live out of California. Berkeley is the hardest school to get into out of the 3. By the way, econ majors at UCB are NOT just haas rejects. Yes, some of them are, but not most of them. There are 2 nobel laureate profs in the econ dept at Berk. No other school in the country has 2 nobel laureates in their econ dept.

I'd personally recommend UCB Econ. Cal's Econ department is excellent and the university's overall reputation is hard to match. But as some have suggested, why limit yourself? Why not apply to Michigan, Penn and UVA?

I don't agree with this statement.

Just offering a point of interest for ab_med.. =)

University of Chicago, well-known for its Econ department, does not have 2 Nobel Laureates. But 4 of them (Becker, Lucas, Fogel, Heckman).

For some businesses, your grad school is more important than undergrad. In fact, in one case I know, they prefer people who went to a smaller LAC and then got a top graduate business school degree such as Chicago, Berkeley, Michigan, Harvard, etc.

well even tho that may be true daaaaad... you still have to get that first job.. and you're not goin to have a grad degree well at least an MBA before that first job..

Dyip, it is indisputable that Berkeley is the hardest to get into. i got into all of them and i dont know anybody who got into berk and not USC. i know a couple people who got into Berk but not LA, but i know many who got accepted at LA and not Berk. Look at the average GPA and SAT scores of all three school and Berk wins.

icebox4.....i knew that they had 4 nobels in their econ dept, however i was referring to nobel profs who teach undergrads and only one of them teaches undergrads.

So, what would be the best way to apply to berkeley: pre-business admin. or as an econ major if i want to apply to haas later on, but still have the option of doing econ as a backup?

well, whether you apply as pre-biz or econ, you will be applying to the college of letters and science and according to L&S, it does not matter what major you apply to. you are not even allowed to declare a major until you finish all the pre-reqs for that major. Everybody coming into berk is considered undeclared until they are formally admitted. So apply as whatever you want, it doesnt matter. Kep in mind though that the econ major at Berk is also "impacted" and thus you have to apply to get in. Its not as hard to get econ as haas, but nonetheless you must have a 3.0 GPA in all the pre-reqs.
