Which would you choose?

I'm going to be a senior and applying to colleges this upcoming school year, and i was wondering which of these schools would be the best for the degree listed as far as job placement after college and career opportunities (in business related careers).

UC Berkeley- Econ. major *I've heard that econ majors here are seen as students that didn't get into Haas.

UCLA- Biz. Econ major

USC- Business Administration major *I've heard that job placement is great only in the LA area, and that USC isn't seen as very prestigious once your out of Southern California.

Also, is an econ degree too theoretical that you wouldn't aquire skills that could help you in managing your own business and those sort of ventures.

Thanks in advance.

Berkeley, for sure. Berkeley's econ graduate ranking is #2 in the nation. there are 3 nobel prize winning profs in the econ department and they all teach undergrad classes. Easy decision.

Anyone else?

USC....NO QUESTION.

Although if I had the credentials to get into Berkeley, I would have applied to UVa, Georgetown and Wharton....and I would pick UVa over Berkeley any day.

Don't listen to nyu..he's a little clueless...

Berkeley does seem to have the edge when it comes to econ, however, keep in mind that as an undergrad you'll probably have to contend with large class sizes.

Actually here's my REAL answer: d) NONE OF THE ABOVE. I would jump off the Golden Gate Bridge before I even CONSIDER CONSIDERING CONSIDERING Berkeley.

If you want my honest answer, there you go. NONE OF THE ABOVE.

futurenyustudent, it's pretty dumb for you to be making these replies because its obvious from your previous name on CC that you hate CA.

Anyway, I'd look at UC-Berkeley, UCLA, and USC. All schools with pretty good placement. I'd say Berkeley is best out of them.

Excuse me, but I believe the question was asking for my opinion?

haha futurenyustudent ur funi, u talk alot. :) berkeley probaly is the best of the 3 cuz its recruitment and respect from employers is higher than ucla and usc but all 3 are close and it probaly will depend on where u plan to work. i know for the west coast, ucla and usc are great choices and if you want to maybe work somewhere else outside of california, berkeley will have the most name recognition, ucla probaly as well. only thing about the biz econ. major at ucla is that i heard it was competitive to get into so i decided to not go to ucla and go to a slightly lower school. better to be at the top at a lower school than at the bottom at a top school right? well maybe.. haha

At Berkeley, could i apply as an econ major, then junior year apply to haas?

when you apply to Berkeley, it doesnt matter wht you apply to in the college of letters and science (which includes practically every major in the school besides engineering). You apply to Haas at the begginning of your soph year and you start the haas curriculum in your junior year. most who dont get into haas end up doing econ.

what was futurenyustudents former CC name?

it was IHateCA

futurenyustudent, you are clearly exhibiting your lack of knowledge about colleges and your immature behavior. you are only a junior in high school, get off these boards and at least get into a college first.

um. what about applying to Berkeley, and then try to get into Haas? you're still in highschool anyway, and that option is certainly still open, no? =)

that being said, i think between those three options presented, the difference among them is not tremendous. once you go to college, it's more a matter of working hard and preparing yourself for worklife.

For berkeley, which major should i apply as if i want to get into haas, but be able to go into economics if i dont get in. I was thinking applying as an econ major and then trying to transfer into haas. Haas would be my first choice, but you're not automatically accepted to the major, like at USC.

There are certain classes you have to take at Berkeley if you want to get into Haas. I'm not sure what they are, but I'm sure a little research would give you an answer. If I remember correctly, most of these classes also fall in the econ major which is often the "backup major". The acceptance rate for Berkeley students into Haas is about 50 percent.

kinds of makes me chuckle everytime I heare someone say this institution is "better" than the other just because its ranking is higher on US NEWS. Of course, UC Berkeley would be better than a third-tier school in middle of nowhere. However, UC Berkeley, UCLA, and USC are very close in terms of quality and placement that you should apply to all of them, see where you get in, and if all, consider all other important factors such as fit, financial situation, and where you want to work after college. Berkeley does have an uppderhand in the East Coast, but out in the West, there is virtually no difference.

So, first of all, apply to all three schools, and that consider all possible options.

USC Business

UCLA Bus. Econ

UCB Econ

UCB Business > USC Business = UCLA Biz Econ > UCB Econ

Don't attack me, but based on what I have read from past threads, UCLA biz econ majors have better job prospects than UCB Econ majors. Unless they're planning on a PhD in Econ, UCB Econ majors are "generally" Haas rejects.

The average salary for UCB Haas majors is $50,000
http://career.berkeley.edu/Major/BusAd.stm

The average salary for UCB Econ majors is $45,000
http://career.berkeley.edu/Major/Econ.stm

As mentioned before, the three schools (for business or econ majors) are very close, so you should consider other factors besides academics such as cost (USC is private), campus, atmosphere, city, environment, fit, etc.
