Would you rather have a job that is prestigious and pays well or do something that you love and are passionate about?

Of course a combination between the two would be great but it is not always the case.

A friend of mine wanted to be a journalist since he was a kid, but he realized that journalists (in my country) don't make enough money and that he could earn more money if he does something else for a living. He wants to be a businessman now.
His case inspired me to create the thread.

It’s impossible for one to happen without the other. I would love to sit around all day doing nothing but I wouldn’t make any money. On the other hand I can work 24 hours a day and be making a fortune but I wouldn’t be very happy. You must find an individual balance somewhere.

If someone values being rich more than their “passion” journalism than you should change your job because you won’t be as happy as you can be. There is not one person who chose their job without considering the average salary. Would you still want to be a neurosurgeon even if you only made $10,000 a year? I don’t think so!

What is a prestigious job? A lawyer? Doctor? Investment banker? If that’s the case, then count me out because I’ve never aspired for any of the aforementioned.

I’m passionate about making money and those jobs aren’t the only routes to take.

Though, I will say this, I will never be a teacher. No offense to education majors, but kids/students/teaching…I cannot do it but much much much respect to those who do.

It depends what you consider “prestigious”. My whole family is in Business/Finance; they made plenty of money with Bachelor’s degrees. I never found Finance interesting, always liked Science, and decided to become a doctor or medical researcher. I won’t be fully trained until 29 or so, and will be in serious debt and live like a broke student for a long time (this is considered prestigious? hah) so I’ve been urged by family to switch to a more lucrative career, like finance or ibanking. Honestly, I tried to make myself like those fields but I just can’t. I know I’m not gonna find the cure for cancer or anything, but I think it’s better to go with what YOU enjoy.

I can’t stand the bs public education system in this country and want nothing to do with it, but my best friend is studying Elementary Education and she loves it. I think most people naturally gravitate toward something and excel at it; you should go with your gut.

Being practical is also important, since most of us aren’t rich. I guess your friend wasn’t that passionate about Journalism if he could dump it so easily. I tried so hard to like Finance to avoid a more difficult and lengthy path but couldn’t, it bored me. Don’t judge him too harshly, there might be more to the story than you know.

I try to compromise between both.

He could definitely integrate business and journalism into his career.
