Whitman Class of 2027 Official Thread

This is the official discussion thread for Whitman Class of 2027 RD applicants. Ask your questions and connect with fellow applicants.

RD Application Deadline is: January 15

Based on past years, it seems like decisions should be out any day. Has anyone heard anything official?

If I remember correctly, I looked up 2022’s dates, which was the first Thursday in March, which would mean this Thursday, 3/2. I’m ready to get an answer.

Are they known for giving merit?

They do give some merit. We did a merit pre-read and my teen was told she’d get at least $15K.

Merit was $25,000 when my daughter asked for a pre-read, but we did not apply though.

I wanted to know if anyone knows what to do if waitlisted. Like if this school has a gift acceptance of students who were waitlisted

I mean amount* (not gift) and maybe the most common day Whitman informs people waitlisted

Son was accepted! $20k merit. We’re from Florida, lonnng way from home…considering it still, recruited for tennis

I got waitlisted from Whitman college. Should I email a letter of continued interest? though it says nothing on my portal

Looking for insight into campus life at Whitman - D accepted and it is one of her top 3 (St. Lawrence and Conn College). We are from Denver - she loves to ski and hike and be outside. Very easy going, quite social. Looking at environmental major but not 100% so like LA approach of taking lots to figure it out. Town is on small side - what do internships/research opps look like? How active are clubs (outdoor, ski, hike)…Any info/impressions would be appreciated. Thanks.

We’re from Colorado too, and my son is a Sophomore at Whitman this year. I can’t think of a more outdoorsy place than Whitman. It seems that the kids are constantly out on skiing/ backpacking/ climbing/ fishing excursions. If this is the kind of thing that your daughter enjoys, I think she’ll really like the culture at Whitman. The areas around the school is really beautiful, and students seem to enjoy exploring. Walla Walla is small but charming and friendly, and I have never had anything bad to eat in the area, so if she wants to go out and get food off campus, she’ll find plenty of options. (Also, the food at Cleveland Commons is really good!) Environmental Studies is a popular major, and students can double major with another discipline if they want to. I think it’s a strong department at Whitman. Also, my son applied for an internship, working with a non-profit here in Colorado for this coming summer. Whitman will pay him directly for the work he’s going to be doing. So we’re pretty impressed. Another thing, the advising has been absolutely great at Whitman and has helped him sort out class and major selection as well as study abroad opportunities. Let me know if you have any other questions about Whitman!

Totally agree, very outdoorsy kids at Whitman. The Outdoor Club is very popular, but many go on their own with friends. My son has spent many weekends rock climbing in Smith Rocks State Park, downhill skiing at Ski Bluewood, or backcountry skiing in the Wallowas or Anthony Lakes. It’s Eastern Washington so the snow is very light and powdery. And ES is a very popular major, and not just ES, you can do quite a few combined ES majors too.

thank you. when we toured she LOVED it but she’s concerned about size…

thank you - she loved it when we toured! Is it pretty easy to get into the Outdoor Club - and sign up for trips? Her older sisters attend a larger school and the clubs are often full and there isn’t many opps for freshman.

My son seems to mainly go climbing, skiing or fishing with his friends, not through the school. However, he signed up for a raft guiding course his freshman Fall semester through Whitman, and had no trouble getting into the course. It was great- they trained some in the pool at school, but they went camping and rafting on rivers in Washington and Idaho, and got certifications for raft guiding. He’s had other opportunities through the school, such as Wilderness First Responder training, but he hasn’t always taken advantage of all that is offered. He also goes off camping on Geology field trips (which have been frequent and pretty amazing), and I’m sure the ES kids have similar field trip options.
Sometimes my kid complains that he just wants to hang on campus for a weekend, but everyone else will be out camping and doing outdoors activities! But that’s when he’s feeling tired and just wants to hang out; he is never short on opportunities to get out there!
