Whitman College Class of 2023

My son got in too. GPA UW 3.5 SAT 1350. OOS Merit aid $12k.

Waitlisted. International looking for a full ride.

My daughter got in. UW 4.0, lots of AP classes and good course rigor. 29 ACT so I guess this was the big weakness. I thought she had a strong essay. Numerous ECs. $8,000 music but only $4,000 Merit. Ouch! I realize this school is more selective than her others, but the difference in merit aid is notable.

Does anyone know anything about vouchers for accepted students days?

Son was accepted! $15,000 Achievement Scholarship. 3.8 UW/4.2 W. 1460 SAT, 32 ACT, 10 AP’s. Student athlete. Lot’s of community service and leadership.

D2 was accepted with $7.5k Achievement, $10.5k RaiseMe
4.0 UW / 4.5 W, Ranked 1/200+, 1530 SAT, 5 AP’s (two 5’s & two 3’s),

The need based aid package (compared to the one D1 was offered 4 years ago) is 5k less while expenses are $10k more. That $15k difference in need based aid is a bit disappointing - especially considering our income is considerably lower than 4 year ago.

Accepted with $25K per year in merit aid (Academic Achievement Scholarship)!! 3.99 UW (my school doesn’t weight), 1580 SAT, 800/780/770 SAT IIs, 6 5s on AP tests. Lots of community service (Eagle Scout), multiple leadership positions in school clubs, and regional/state-level awards in journalism and jazz.

Does anyone know how common it is for them to give out a 25k merit scholarship? It would be a huge privilege to go to Whitman, but I am curious about what this might mean for my chances at more selective institutions.

Daughter accepted with $25K merit. Very strong grades, test scores, and course rigor. We love Whitman!

Has anyone found Whitman to be creative in coming up with aid or financial solutions? They talk about how affordable the school is but it seems their merit aid is toughest to come by. Am I missing something?

seabay, I tried really hard not to join College Confidential unless I might be able to help. The families I know who have or have had children at Whitman have received generous financial aid packages, including us. I think it cannot hurt to contact Whitman’s Financial Aid office to see if your child missed out on one of the special merit scholarships. We didn’t know about the theatre scholarship, for example. Also, you might share with them another college’s package you received. This helped one friend’s family negotiate a better package (at another school). Good luck! By all accounts I have heard, Whitman is a great school for the right student.

throwaway, my sense is Whitman doesn’t give out $25,000 unless a student is very attractive and they believe will be a great asset to their student body. Your child has really impressive achievements. I wonder how my daughter is going fare with the more selective colleges, too.

They were creative with my daughter. They surprised her in Sophomore year with a 10,000 Costco scholarship that she hadn’t even applied for. There were other helpful things along the way also, such as funding for her internship.
