Who are generous on financial aid for internationals?

Hi,

Sadly from what I have gathered so far, international financial aid is very limited in many schools and the process if super competitive. But, just wondering which universities are normally 'famous for' giving out RELATIVELY generous aid for internationals. The list should focus preferrably on the top 50s.

Thanks in advance!

Hey - fin aid is very hard to come by for internationals. There are a few 'need-blind' colleges which will dole out as much aid as you need, and will not consider your financial status while making their decision. HYPM, Middlebury and Williams are these colleges. Brown and Amherst are also very generous, although not need-blind. NYU and Cornell are notoriously bad.

Don't even consider places like NYU, Boston U, USC, UVA or such, because they give close to zero aid to internationals. I would apply to LAC because they are more generous. Of course HYPMS+Amherst+Williams+Middlebury are generous by default. Other schools might be places like Colgate, Lafayette, Oberlin, Hamilton, and some more LACs in the top 10-30 range.

I received very generous awards from Dartmouth, Macalester, and Bryn Mawr, none of which is need-blind towards international students. However, the University of Chicago told my counselor that I would have been admitted had I not applied for aid (I was rejected). I was disappointed by Wellesley's award ($25,000 less than Dartmouth's), but I'm not sure whether that was a function of my status as an international student or my family's particular situation.

Be aware that competition at schools that are need-blind towards international students is fierce; I thought I had a good chance at Middlebury and a decent one at Williams but was waitlisted at both. For me, the need-aware schools ended up being a far better deal, and I will be attending one of them (Dartmouth). YMMV.
