if your family is not eligible for financial aid, remember that its not too late to look at other schools for merit-based aid. Since you were admitted to Chicago, you might be a good scholarship candidate at Case, U of Rochester or Brandeis (to name a few).

There is always the hope for Merit Aid from Chicago. They don't do that until around March. It was first choice for National Merit.

I didn't get a card!!! Today perhaps?

I didn't either...we're both in New York, could that mean something?

As I recall from last year, some of the admissions folks got more cards out than others. Perhaps it is a function of who did (or didn't) get writer's cramp!

Just got back from out of town. Thick envelope arrived, no card from adm rep (that's OK), and the highly persoanlized (NOT) letter from College Aid saying we were welcome to have DS apply for a Stafford loan. We were expecting this (we sit on the hairy edge of full pay but have med expenses > 10% of income), but they sure were cold about it.

CountingDown,
sorry to hear about the medical expenses. If these are likely to continue in the future, I think it might be worth discussing this with finaid. If your child might be in the hunt for a merit scholarship, all may not be lost. One of my son's friends that was full freight was offered the 10,000 merit, and I believe that some of our CC posters are (or know of) others in that situation.

My son could have attended the university his dad works at tuition-free, so it is a real wrench for us making our payments to the bursar. For our family, however, it has been worth it. Just not easy.

OM, My D passed up a free ride to Michigan State in order to have a full ride (i.e. no fin aid, beyond a loan) at UofC. It has turned out to be a great investment in human capital (to use UofC econ lingo) in ways beyond what we could have ever expected. Because of her UofC education, she's won honors that are truly life changing. This never would have happened at MSU.

What did she major in?

1500 grant
6200 in federal loans

very meh... parents are divorced. my mom's income around 100k; my dad doesn't have much to contribute. very meh indeed.
