Who here is a geography major?

Also came across this and hopefully this will discussion will get more replies!

1-Why did you choose geography?
2-What school do you go to?
3-What do you plan to do with it?
4-Do you want to obtain higher degrees?
-If so, in geography or another field?
-What schools are you applying to?
5-Are you double/triple/quadruple majoring in anything?
-If so, what?
6-Are you working towards a BA or BS?
7-Are you minoring?
-In what?

1- Was accepted to UNLV for hospitality management (is one of the best schools in the field), a music school in Chicago, and CU Denver for education and geography. I was almost certain that I wanted to be a musician, than I thought more about what my life would be like 10 years from now and decided to study geography in hopes of becoming a teacher or urban/transportation planner. Geography was also my favorite traditional subject in high school. I love maps, am very spatially oriented, and am a public transportation and city lover. And at the time I didnā€™t know there was undergrad degrees in city planning. Also wanted to study astrophysics at CU Boulder but at the time, was too worried about my math skills.

2- Iā€™m sophomore/junior at CU Denver. (Technically am a junior but after classes getting cancelled and some switching around, it puts me at the credit count as a sophomore).

3- Was intending to be a city planner but after taking GIS, I cannot stand it. There are few city planning jobs and the ones that are available want/need GIS skills. So now Iā€™m looking at adding another major or looking at masterā€™s programs in different fields.

4- Yes. Was looking at MAā€™s in Geography at CU Boulder and University of Denver. But since physical geography and GIS are not my favorite, that would make me enjoy only half the degree. I have been looking at accounting (CU Denver, CU Boulder, DU), hospitality management (UNLV), education licensure, and still browsing around masters in city planning (I really like Portland State University for city planning).

5- Thinking of adding a major within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences to fill out my electives. Looking at Communications and Economics. Or if Iā€™m up for the challenge, than Math. If I had to start over, I wouldā€™ve majored in Accounting and minored in Geography or Urban Planning.

6- BA. CU Denver doesnā€™t have BS in geography. Only concentrations in Urban planning, Env. Science, Env. Studies, general geography (what Iā€™m doing), and they just discontinued their Earth Science concentration for some reasonā€¦

7- If I donā€™t double major in any of the subjects in question 5, Iā€™ll likely minor in one of them.

I think another good question to ask is if we would recommend someone majoring in Geography and if we regret it.
I would recommend geography to someone who is up to learn GIS and/or remote sensing and would love a job in that field, as thatā€™s where most of the geography jobs are. Itā€™s also a great subject for someone who wants to learn a little bit of everything. Thereā€™s the cultural element, environmental, human geography, physical/geology/earth science/astronomy, urban element, tech side, and more. A double major with history would be great for social studies education.

For the most part, Iā€™m not too regretful of my major. I do wish that I realized the market for city planners and GIS beforehand and then I wouldā€™ve thought of a different major and wouldā€™ve minored in geography or planning.

The world needs more recognition for geography/earth science/GIS/planning majors!
