Our twice postponed trip with our son’s looks like it will be happening in May. I have lots of things already planned and booked from the previous postponed trips, but thought it would be fun to discuss with others who are so going.
We plan on doing Milan just one night, day of arrival, then Venice, Florence and Rome. We’ve been to Venice and Rome.
We are thinking about going to Italy as graduation trip/final sendoff for my S22. If we do it, we’ll be visiting some less common areas - we’ve done Florence, Rome, Venice, Verona, Mantua, Pisa and Sirmione (lake Garda) with the kids already (2 separate trips) and I’ve been to Italy a couple of other times as well so we’d like to see something new. May visit with some Italian friends we have, but its all up in the air right now. We may do something entirely different. I love Italy - one of my favorite countries. The food is just awesome!
I would love to go to Italy in the late fall, but H is not ready to commit to travel outside the US yet. I will be interested to hear all about your travel to Italy so I can gather information for our future trip.
We are going to Italy for 2 weeks beginning of July. I am flying to Milan by myself (D1, H and inlaws are flying to Rome). I am taking a train Florence from Milan and staying there for few days. D2 may join me. If not, she will come to the villa when I get there. I am then taking a train to a villa we have rented in Umbria and join D1 and her in-laws. The in-laws leave few days later. We stay at the villa for another week and then off to Rome for few days. We will do wine tasting and visit some local towns while in Umbria.
The villa we rented has a beautiful pool. It is completely renovated with modern bathrooms and kitchen. The pictures look beautiful. I am very excited about the trip.
My daughters are planning a trip around Italy. They are going to start in Naples, see the Amalfi coast, then take a ferry from Bari to Corfu (not Italy, I know) and finally go to Milan. My older daughter has previously been to Venice, Bologna, Ferrara, and Sicily, so she wanted to see new parts of the country. She’s planning to apply to graduate school there, so she wants to explore as much as possible.
Yes! Recommendations, please! We’ve been wanting to take DD and DS to Italy for years, and it just hasn’t happened. Have been afraid to plan anything in the past year or two, but thinking we may throw caution to the wind and go in June. It’s been years since DH and I have been. We’re thinking Venice, Florence, and Rome as well. The highlights. Any recommendations for doing this with college/ pre-college aged kids? What should we see? (I already know what I’m going to eat! )
Italy is my kids’ favorite country so far (we’ve been lucky to have traveled a lot before the pandemic). We saw Rome and Florence when they were younger (I think 10/12) and did northern Italy (Venice, Milan, Verona) when they were 13/15. They love Italian food (and gelato) which made traveling with them easy from the food standpoint. In Rome they loved the Vatican & Vatican museum (a surprisingly good collection of mummies), the Roman Forum, the Pantheon and the Trevi fountain/Spanish steps - the colosseum was a big disappointment. I highly recommend the Uffizi in Florence if you enjoy museums - however, you really need to get your tickets in advance if you want to avoid immense lines. Just walking around these wonderful cities is great. In terms of travel - if you are just doing Venice, Florence and Rome take the train - driving in Italy is only worth it if you are planning to see spots in the countryside where the train doesn’t go. Driving in Italy is crazy!
My D and SIL planned to honeymoon in Italy (Tuscany, Almafi Coast) in the summer of 2020 (when they got married in what turned out to be a covid micro-wedding). The trip was postponed in 2020 and again in 2021. They are hoping to get there this summer.
Fingers crossed that by the spring/summer the world will be in a better/safer place.
I have tickets for October. Flying into Milan and out of Florence. 3 week duration. This is a postponement from my Oct 2020 trip. No set itinerary but I know 1 night in Milan. I’m thinking Lake Como, Cinque Terre, Tuscany, Umbria,Florence. Considering Venice and one other stop. Saving southern Italy for another trip.
We’re going in early June. We’re hoping that gives the Omicron wave time to settle down. We will be flying into Venice, staying for a couple of days, then taking a train to Siena, where we start a week-long e-bike trip through small Tuscan towns. We’ve done village to village bike tours in Europe before, and we’ve found them to be an incredible way to see some off the beaten track areas, with plenty of relaxing and fabulous eating along the way. We’ll end our trip with a coupe of nights in Florence. I’m very excited!
Our family is planning to go for a week around Memorial Day. We are staying in Florence, but also have some day trips scheduled in and around Tuscany (Siena and San Gimignano, maybe somewhere else) plus Modena.
This will be the second trip to Italy for me and my wife. The previous trip was 25 years ago (Tuscany and Rome), and was our last big blow-out before we started having children.
A friend went to Milan back in mid-December 2021; he said that apart from having to wear masks indoors, and showing your vaccination status upon entry into the country, he really didn’t have any problems.
I signed up for a workshop in Tuscany at the end of October. I had planned to go to this workshop in 2020, but it was canceled. The plan is for my H to meet me afterwards and we’ll travel to the Amalfi Coast. He’s starting to wonder if we should go. I’m still in.
Ok, this is great. Perhaps we could share some plans. I’ve not been to Florence. We will be there 3 nights. The last day we will take an all day Tuscany tour visiting a couple small, turns and a winery. That leaves 1.5 days in the city.
Did anyone walking the stairs of the Duomo? I’m really thinking this is something I don’t want to do. Also, did you like the Uffuzi? We will have a Michaelango tour.
I was debating on doing a walking tour with a guide, but feel maybe I should leave time to just meander.
This hotel in Florence comes highly recommended (by my brother), Palazzo Castri 1874
I am also considering this one, Ponte Vecchio Suites & Spa
I used to love this hotel until it got a bit pricey, The Westin Excelsior.
I loved the Uffizi (Italian for “offices” and used by the Medici when they ran the city) when my wife and I toured it back in 1997, and I have planned a visit for this time around also (so the kids can see it as well). I made reservations via TripAdvisor for this tour: 2023 Skip the Line: Small group Uffizi Masterclass by an Art Expert. If you can do anything to get inside easier (by skipping the very long lines to get in), I recommend doing so.
As I recall, there is a replica of David outside the Uffizi; so in my opinion it really isn’t necessary to go to L’Accademia to see the original (probably way too many touristos). I am planning another walking tour to do just that, of course, although it is paired with a tour of the Duomo, the Baptistery, and a few other things. I’ve not been on a tour where you can walk the steps up to the cupola of the Duomo’s dome, and I don’t know at this point that my aged legs will take me up and down.
There is also shopping on the Ponte Vecchio and elsewhere; and when I was in Florence previously my wife and I visited the Boboli Gardens, south of the Arno River, where you can get a nice view of the city.
We did the Piedmont region and it was great. Stayed in Neive, attended the International Cheese Festival nearby, did lots of wine tasting. Had the best food we’ve had in Europe. From there it’s an easy drive to the Swiss and French Alps.
