Who is the better candidate?

What were the results of your college apps?-or are you and your "friend" juniors?

EDIT: Right, you're juniors...my bad. I just re-read your post and...yeah. Well if I were an adcom I'd probably take him over you.

I would choose the second applicant. He seems more interesting and dedicated, and he gets bonus points for being unique. Although I kind of question when someone says that they have great or really good essays, because of course the person who writes it is going to say that. I'm sure that the essays are going to be perfect in terms of grammar and structure (which you can probably tell by an SAT score), but a lot of these "excellent" essays bore me to tears. The all A's, despite the lower SAT score shows more dedication and makes him seem more human. I also think playing the trumpet it pretty cool, especially turning that into a tutoring thing. Doing drama, and being in the GSA also gave him more depth. Plus the facts that you said a lot of his teachers love him, and he is liked by most. His leadership positions also seem more interesting, in comparison to being the one of seven of the captains on a team.

The first applicant is of course impressive as well, but I do not see a lot of things that stand out. The two things that stand out is the SAT score, and being a varsity athlete. The rank is excellent too, but if I am strictly comparing it to the first guy then of course you're going to be second. Looking back, most of your ECs are very similar, but you just don't seem to succeed at them like he does. The fact that you said this person is not that liked by their teachers is a big turn off. It kind of screams tool, but that?s hard to tell without the interview/essay.

"though we aren't straight up friends, i always know what he does. keep your friends close, your rivals closer."

Leave the gun, take the cannolis...

LOL.

*** are cannolis?

"keep your friends close, your rivals closer."
Dude, you are pathetic. He would not fall under the latter category outside the childish college app competition. I think socializing with friends is the best you can do to increase your chances at college.......and life.
On the topic, I think at this point it all gets down to essays and recs.

I think both would get accepted.

An asian that sucks at math? an oxymoron. haha

Both of you will have great chances. however, I believe harvard and brown are crazy reaches. The fact that you are 1 of 7 captains is hardly a feat, and your personal opinion that he is the "worst player on the team" is irrelevant and I highly doubt he will be putting that on his application.

You are both involved but your activities are similar. Besides the gender difference, its very hard to tell you apart. I think a lot will depend on the essay (a poor writer may have a better topic).

work on controlling your bitterness. despite what you may think, you're not better than anyone else.
