I know that there are threads similar to mine, which compare other writing classes to the humanities core courses, buttttttttttttt I would just like to know directly: how were the classes? I already know they offer a lot of GE units. But I would like to know simply if you enjoyed the classes, got good grades in them....... if not, why not? What's the hardest part... etc. Thanks!

Yes I liked it, but I think I am the only advocate for it here :P

Pros:
-You learn a lot
-You’re exposed to a lot of new things
-There’s usually a lot of smart people in the class
-The professors/TAs are usually really smart and interesting (3/3 for me!)
-You get to read plays (we even got to act out a scene, haha), read historical documents, watch operas, analyze paintings, understand philosophy
-If you’re a humanities major, it prepares you for a lot of things (like research papers and junk)

Cons:
-Lots of reading, especially on things you may not like (oh gawd, Descartes)
-Lots of writing, sometimes the writing instructions are confusing
-Really demanding (but in the end I felt it was worth it)
-It is not really regulated so how you do depends on the teacher. You can get a really easy teacher one quarter and then a really hard one the next. Some teachers give out XX assignment and another teacher will give XY so it’s not very easy to compare notes on HOMEWORK (but everything else is fine because everyone learns the same thing at lecture)

Tips:
-Keep up on the reading
-Keep up on the reading
-Keep up on the reading
-Keep up on the writing
-VISIT OFFICE HOURS, DO THIS

For me, the midterms and finals were like this: first part was short answer (you only have to answer like 8 out of 10), second part was a long essay (and you get to pick the topic from three preselected ones)

Here’s the website for the past two years: <a href=“EEE+ Home | UCI”>EEE+ Home | UCI. You guys are the last of this cycle and next year the curriculum will change, so take advantage of this by borrowing all the stuff you can.
-You gotta buy/borrow a lot of books and materials

If you have any more questions about this course, you can ask me. I did generally well (got B+ to As) but then again I am an English major :/

the only con that matters: it’ll hurt your gpa

pro: its “enriching”

Why would it lower your GPA? Is there too much reading or something?

I assume it will lower GPA because of it consumes a lot of your time; therefore, depriving you of your time for your other classes. And it is difficult, or so I heard.

and its 8 units.

Oh geez, it won’t lower your GPA. The only thing that can lower your GPA is YOU. I took around 16 units every quarter my first year and 14 credits my first quarter and my GPA is at a 3.7 level. Humanities Core will not kill you. I know a guy who took Writing 39B and his T.A. gave him a D+ because she was whack. Taking Writing 39B will not automatically help you; it depends on you and your TA to an extent. Just don’t party TOO hard, pay attention to your studies, just be an all-around responsible student.

Take what seems interesting. You can always drop.

could a nursing science student take humanities core?

I’m sure any major can take humcore

oh awesome. thanks!
