Who wants to be a billionaire?!

Want to be a billionaire? It seems that 15 living Michigan alums are billionaires. Only 6 universities have more!

I sorted through the 1,000+ Billionaires listed in the March Forbes "Richest People". I found a suspecious number (over 100) of Russian billionaires aged between 35 and 55.

At any rate, I figured I might as well breakdown the numbers according to university affiliation. Nothing too shocking really.

I broke it down into four groups:

1) By the number who pursued their undergraduate studies at the institution.
2) By the number who pursued their graduate studies at the institution
3) By the total number
4) By the total net worth of the individuals who attended the institution

If one of the lucky souls completed both undergraduate and graduate studies at the same university, I only count them in the undergraduate figures. There are no double-dippers!

Please keep in mind that some (many!) of those did not graduate and like any other list, it is not 100% accurate, so if any of you have corrections to make, please do so.

One must remember that the numbers below do not really speak to a university's ability to "produce" a billionaire. The odds of one of us ever making that much money in our lifetime is microscopic. The purpose of this little exercise (tell it to the guy who spent the better part of three days sorting through the profiles of over 1,000 billionaires!) is purely "academic". Actually, givien the number of billionaires some of the schools below have, they will naturally have a significant advantage raising money through private donations.

Enjoy!

jaw drops Emory isn't on there?!?!?!?!

haha, jk, thanks for the post, really quite interesting!

Now divide the total endowment by the total net value of the school...and rank that...I think it'd be good to see in terms of giving percentage of worth rather than actual "giving rate" which is about how many people give back.

Maybe you should have found the number of billionaires based on what size the school. For example, UMICH has 9 billionaires, and Dartmouth and Columbia both have 8, but Dartmouth and Columbia are like 1/6th the size of Michigan.

Ha, look at that, Splintercell! More billionaires than Cornell, Vandy, and Emory.

Sorry, I just had to say that. No hard feelings! =)

In any event, there are a lot more people who graduate from U Michigan than some of the other schools up there, so I suppose that makes these rankings kind of slanted?

I did what I said...did the percentages of endowment over alumni wealth. First was Duke, I think second was Princeton. Michigan was near the middle to the back of the pack. Interesting to note is that Harvard was near the back of the pack, but still has the largest endowment. It's because their alumni are so rich.

Two Michigan schools in the top 20, nice.

I would also like to point out that I have met one UM billionaire, Tom Monaghan. Last I knew he was teetering on the 1 billion mark, so he may or may not be on that list.

Tom Monaghan is not on the list.

Ridonkulous, billionaires as a percentage of the total student body would be pointless. Other than Harvard and Stanford, no so school has more than 30 Billionaires, and that's out of over 100,000 living alums. Like I said, this is not an attempt at rating schools by their abilty to produce billionaires, it is just a fun little exercise.

Anna Molly, Emory has sero (0) billionaires and Vanderbilt just two. So combined, Cornell, Emory and Vanderbilt (which combined are slightly larger as Michigan) have 13 Billionaires, which is still lower than Michigan's 15.

I decided to take it upon myself to calculate the new data based on how many billionaires graduate from the undergraduate school compared to the number of students. (I used Alexandre's data for the billionaires, and Collegeboard.com for the class sizes)
