Who's already accepted their SIR for UCI??

yeah sd vs uci was a big thing for me... but i went and slept over a my friends house near campus and showed me around than stuff.. Definately better than boring sd.

Yeah I already submitted it, just waiting for Housing Contract now ^^

JK! i just sent in my SIR! :) i got in for fall quarter!

Since you submitted SIR, you must also did SLR, is there any documents required to be submitted for SLR for the person as US citizen and live in CA from HS?

hmmm...still deciding between uci, ucsd, & cal poly pomona...i really think im just going to close my eyes and pick seeing as im undeclared anyways...

crimsonpham or anyone decided UCI over UCSD,
Congrats to your decisions. what are your majors?
My D is still deciding between UCSD or UCI. We have visited both. She is very strong in social sci and wants to be in business / politic sci / international.
Your input of why UCI over UCSD will help.

ucparent
comp. engineering
i wasnt allowed to choose, my parents made me choose uci
why? i dont know, maybe cuz they are azzholes

ucparent,

i'm also fond of the social sciences myself choosing to double major in a combination of either psychology sociology, business, philospohy, or political science. not exactly sure what two combo yet.

about UCI and UCSD..
my circumstances..

i live 20 minutes away from uci and so my parents really wanted me to go to uci, even though i wanted to go to ucsd. at first, my only stigma was this: they would make me commute to uci. however, after reasoning with them that college students do better when they actually live on campus and graduate faster, they told me i could dorm at uci if i wanted to. so with the matter of living on campus or commuting out of the way, it was suppose to become a more equal chance between which i would choose uci and ucsd; however that wasn't so because i received scholarships for both schools, more money from uci than ucsd. so it was up to me to choose whether to go to uci and have a free education or go to ucsd and end up with 20k of loans that when i graduate i'll hafta pay back MYSELF. i've always wanted to go to ucsd because i've always desired a change of scenery; being away from my parents and my old friends was just so appealing to me; i've always liked trying new things. i asked my friends and they told me that if i wanted to go to ucsd so much then 20k is gonna 'petty change' when i graduate anyways. going to school at uci for free was really appealing to me too; there's really no reason to be in debt until graduate school right? i dunno....

but anyways, in the end i decided to pick uci.
reasons:
- MAJOR reason: uci is giving me a free ride and if i get tired of living on-campus or off campus, i'll always have the option of moving back home and commuting to save money
- uci will less competitive than ucsd forsure
- mostly likely, the difference between uci and ucsd in prestige will seem neglible by graduate schools and therefore a 3.8 at uci looks better in comparasion with a 3.6 at ucsd (students at sd will be more competitive) i'm planning to go to law school and admissions to them is a number game, this was a big factor for me
- students seem more spirited at uci than ucsd
- i'll get a car if i go to uci but not ucsd
- uci is a great school period

although i sent in my SIR,SLR, and housing for uci a week ago.. i am still on the verge of taking it back and sending one in for ucsd at the last minute

why? because..
- MAJOR purely psychological reason: i really want to be independent and feel what it's like to get away from the 16 years of history in orange county. none of my friends go to sd, it'll be an adventure to hafta make new ones (don't get the wrong idea, i already have the best friends ever)
other reasons..
- have a change of scenery
- ucsd gives clears a lot more of my GEs because they are more AP credit friendly (uci is a REAL stickler with ap credit)
- sd is near the beach, and its beautiful

so in conclusion, under my circumstances, i chose uci. irvine obviously has maaaaaaany more benefits for ME and would seem like the logical choice; HOWEVER the psychological reasons are strong impelling me to go for ucsd. if i choose ucsd and take back my SIR, it would be simply a pure psychologically intuitive choice.

other notes.. uci is offering a business major for the first time ever for 2006 students. take that which ever way you want? good, bad? i dunno.

and another note just a note ucsd poli sci is ranked VERY high and the professors are verrrrrry good. everyone that is in their program LOVES it.

so those are my circumstances, i'm sure your daughter's are different.

people keep telling me to go ucsd where i will be happy most. the thing is wouldn't know if i'll be happy or not until i'm actually there. who knows? so i made the rational decision, however, i'll still be debating with myself silently until may 2nd whether to make a last minute life altering change or not.

have you and your daughter sit down and make a list of the pros for each school. it'll help you whether a little or a lot.

crimsonpham, you are a bold person. I highly respect your decision for UCI. Being an asian among a large asian community, many asian students keep factoring in the "prestige" for each school and neglecting the personal benefits. I like how you truly assert yourself in this decision.

As for the psychological difficulties of denying UCSD, I understand how you feel. I would like to emphasize a huge factor in the college experience, independence. You should already know what I mean. People rememeber their years in high school and college the most. If I asked my parents what big things they did from age 30-40, they would not remember as well as the big things they did during their schooling years! Leaving your hometown is a great way to open your eyes to more parts of the world. This obviously favors UCSD (sorry to say).

I know numbers is a huge game for law school, but experiencing independence is a great thing to do, especially while you are young (and still growing). I, myself, went on a trip to South California with a few friends. We were all either 17 or 18 years old! The sole purpose of the trip was to visit the campuses, but I had other intentions. I wanted to experience independence with a group of friends of the same age for one week. I got a little taste of independence for one week, it was awesome (yea, this is the first time my parents let me out of their hands...). Anyway, I hope you make a great decision you won't regret. If you want to, by any chance, discuss your decision, I would like to help. Good luck!

EDIT: OH YEA! Usually every college student that doesn't come from a household with a 150k+ yearly income has loans! Don't be discouraged by the loans you will have to pay off in the future. 20k is pretty much chump change as your friends say (I will be paying back a lot more). My parents spent a good 10 years paying off their college loans. It is healthy. You will get some motivation to work after college!

most insightful forsure. thanks jas0n.

crimsonpham, very thoughtful. thanks!

Sent SIR to UCI CHP, over CAL, UCLA, UCSD, and UCD (regents and IS).

I signed my SIR about 2 weeks ago to become a potential Anteater. UCI is my only other choice anyway.

You sound so defeated jas0n. I'm sorry you didn't get your first choice school. Hopefully everything turns alright for you. Who knows? Maybe Irvine is where you are supposed to be. :)

jas0n, i'm sorry that your appeal didn't work out for your first choice. i'm sure uci will be better than you expect it to be. its hard to ask of you to look to the positive side because i know that you are probably not feeling too great about being pitted against the wall on where you have to go to college, however. it is important to be positive and look past this entire situation before entering in the fall. come in with a positive attitude and an openmind and to give uci a chance to prove itself to you that it's worthy of your attendence. it's important that you don't enter uci thinking to yourself that you had no other choice but to go to there. before you enter in let go of all the remorse you feel. trust me, it'll be better for the people around you, and especially it'll be better for you; you will be more happy. you're experience at uci will be at most how you choose to enjoy it. whatever you do, don't let yourself be swallowed by contempt at the uc system. uci is a great school and a great place and i'm sure your experience will be positive if you come in intially with an openmind. i'm sure after looking back at this whole ordeal and attending uci, after meeting all different people you will meet and overcoming all the various obstacles and hardships you will have to face, on so many levels you will know that you're life couldn't have gone any other way and that everything has shaped you into the person you will be, this person, a person that will be deeply satisfied with. everything in the end will turn out alright for you at uci if you are insistent in making it happen.

hopelessness is the worst feeling; do not let it consume you.

keep your head up buddy, and think positive when you enter this fall because everything will work out in the end :)

amen crimsonpham

UCI is a terrific school, never forget that.

Thanks Crim. I'm definitely looking forward to attending UCI and learning about electronics and programming! Muhaha. Thanks you guys.

just sent in my SIR....

i already sent in my SIR but do i also need to send in the SLR (statement of legal residence) by may 1st???
