hahahahahaha so true
it was playing like a movie in my head while I read it
a HORROR movie

idk, still enjoyable though
thanks 45 percenter! you’re like a Penn Guru
and I think that’s what I expected
there’s 4,500 of us, they have to be quick!

Though I expected them to only take a brief look at applications, I would love for them to spend at least half an hour on an application that I spent weeks working on full of accomplishments that took me at least three years to achieve.

Of course, another big difference is that the whole process is now virtually paperless (a big priority of Eric Furda’s when he first became Admissions Dean). I can’t imagine how they’d manage all the paper with the current numbers of applications they receive.

I kind of don’t want to finish/submit my other college apps because then it makes the reality of not going to Penn…well…a reality hahah… which it probably is but still I have an immovable deep-seated aversion to realizing it so
Anyone feel the same?

I definitely feel the same way but I can’t not work on apps. My college list is pretty long and I need to get most of the apps done before December 9th to make the regular decision deadline. So, if I were to just rely on getting in, I would be stuck with like 7 apps to do in one weekend if I don’t get in.

I just read that article. I didn’t realize it was so important to come from a school that doesn’t have many other applicants to that school. Hopefully this helps a little bit…

“Let’s grab him”??? OH MY GOD that is the scariest thing I’ve ever read. I literally had heart palpitations. 1 minute 42 seconds and they decide? Based on like 5 factors? They don’t even get to know the real “us”. The process really annoys me like anything sometimes. The interviews should DEFINITELY carry more weight (and probably not be with alumni), it’s totally unfair. How can you admit someone to your university without hearing them speak and meeting them first? It just doesn’t make sense.

"“development cases” - students who might be admitted in part because of large donations by parents" -----> this happens for the IVIES??? Here we are working our butts off for um all of our lives and people get to pay to get in? :@

Who else wishes the world was still like this? : “Let’s watch this one very closely and help her succeed,” says Anita Gelbard, associate dean of the Wharton undergraduate school."

But I still really wish I got to sit in on a committee session? (And can we please not discuss the “reject” pile? It gets me WAY more scared than I want to be right now :P)

Also guys, I have a general question, if someone could please take a stab at it?

I really need to send Penn my updated grades for this month (like I HAVE to) - so the best way to do this would be by using the Mid Year Report on Common App right? Do you think they’d have already read my application by now and it’s too late or that I should still go ahead with it?

Guys, it says your regional director will spend about 30 minutes on your application before it gets reviewed by the whole committee. The 30 minutes is obviously not factored into the 1 minute and 42 seconds so don’t feel like you got ripped off :)

You can see in the attached that, for the five year period, Legacy added a bit of a boost for ED, but not anything for RD (this is from August 2010, so it does not include the most recent class):

38% - 42% Legacy ED acceptance rate
28% - 34% acceptance rate for all ED applicants

Same RD acceptance rate for legacy and for all applicants

Not the Midyear Report, but the Optional Grade Report. The Midyear Report is for semester grades. Your counselor should submit the Optional Grade Report to report first-quarter grades. Look under Counselor School Forms to see the Optional Grade Report form.

^ Only if Penn asks for them (to confirm an upward trend, etc.). My understanding is that the Admissions Office will ask your counselor to submit first-quarter grades, if it wants them.

Interestingly, the PennAlumni Admissions Resource Center (successor to the Penn Alumni Council on Admissions) recently updated its web site to include this statement:

Obviously, as the overall Penn admissions picture has become much more competitive in recent years, so has legacy admissions.

I am so screwed over. I got my SAT results today for November…and I got a 590 in Biology M. Did I just ruin my chances at Penn? I got a 710 on Math 2 and 1, and I also have a 2080 SAT. Will they take into consideration the fact that I only took one semester of Biology before in junior year and that I couldn’t take senior year biology due to course restrictions of IB at my school? I will finish grade 12 Biology, but not until the end of senior year. What do I do? Call them? You guys are the only ppl who probably understand :(

Hey guys,
So I submitted my ED app about 30 mins before it was due on the 4th… but on the comm app it says it was downloaded on the 5th. What does this mean? Did any of you get this as well? And does this disqualify me to be an ED applicant?
