Whose applying early action to Chicago?

I'm applying Early Action! I've finished my favorite things essay and my "Why Chicago?" essay. The Table essay is still in the works. It's going to be a beast of an essay when I'm finished. :D

I'm doing EA! If only their had ED, I would do it in a heartbeat. I'm flying over there next week for my interview; hopefully all goes well!

I'm doing the Table prompt; about halfway done. I haven't started or even looked at the others, but they sound totally reasonable.

I'm also applying EA. I've finished my table essay and written my Why Chicago essay, though that will probably change after I visit in October. I'm still not sure what to do for my favorite things one. It's so scary! I (obviously) really want to get in, but i've known several people who haven't before me. We'll see how it goes.

wait....are interviews required?

No, not required.

http://collegeadmissions.uchicago.edu/level3.asp?id=383

Interviews
Interviews are not required for admission into the College. However, we encourage you to have one so that you can learn more about the University of Chicago and we can get to know you better. Each of the two options described below is treated equally in the selection process.

Me! I actually did the 'create your own prompt' essay--maybe it goes against the whole cool-essay-topic-at-Chicago perk, but I really really like my own essay. It was inspired by one of the improv topic's requirements. I have yet to do the favorite things topic (but know exactly what I'm going to write) and the why Chicago one (that'll probably be my hardest--I don't know what to write without sounding like every other applicant!). BTW, how long are the short-answer essays supposed to be? I know they say 'a paragraph or two,' but honestly. . .

^^tinadigsirony,
I think it's the same "write how much you need to answer the question thoroghly and express yourself fully" procedure regarding length. My "Why Chicago" essay is roughly 400 words, basically three beefy paragraphs.

ya .. i gonna apply EA 2, and i'm an intl

I'm another EA applicant!
I know how I'm writing my "Why UChicago?" and "Favorite Things" essays, but haven't actually started them.
I have NO idea what my improv essay is going to be about. I think that I'm literally going to improvise. This weekend/some day this week at 2AM, I'm just going to sit down and WRITE.... and erase... and edit... and switch paragraphs... etc.
Hopefully, that will work.

I'm already nervous. Ahhh.

lol, I'll probably write my essays starting October 7th

im going EA and Ill be doing either the dinner table essay or the picture essay

i'll probably be applying early action - if i can find the time to finish everything by nov 1st.

and is it just me, or does everyone else prefer the previous years' questions to this year's? "how do you feel about wednesdays" and that miles davis quote on playing what wasn't there: terrific questions, no-holds-barred. a green light for anything you can think of, really.

i didn't like the improv question - too many restrictions, what with the random elements you're supposed to include, and that line from james joyce's book. they would either have to steer the direction of the story towards something i didn't want, or it would they'd have to be inserted as non-sequiturs somewhere - and i despise being told what non-sequiturs to include.

out of curiosity, are any of you
a) going for an interview of some sort?
b) filling up the optional comments section? i wonder what exactly people write there
c) planning on sending the optional supplement?

and does anyone plan on applying anywhere else? i'll be going for williams, pomona, swarthmore, dartmouth and perhaps a few others - all regular d. a part of me's dying to go to uchicago, but i'd be a fool if i didn't apply to these other colleges which i can see myself in.

I remember I used my optional comments section to shortlist a couple of awards. I really think they mean optional comments though, for all the "I want to talk about X, where can I do that?" questions.

That said, don't feel like you have to fill it in with something just because it's there.... I mean.... it is optional.

When I applied, I did not apply to any schools RD after my EA acceptance, but that was pretty foolish of me. Not giving myself the option of a Bryn Mawr or a Smith or a Reed or an Oberlin? It's hard to make decisions now about what you will want in a year. So yes, apply to the other schools that strike your fancy and delay your decision. Chicago will court you madly in the interim with handwritten cards, newspapers, and phone calls.

i'm applying ea--i've gotten all the envelopes and forms to my teachers and my counselor, and i've filled out most of the application (surprisingly). all i have left is to write the essays and my responses to the short answer questions. i don't really feel like the essay questions are at all restricting this year... you could write about anything with prompts 1-3.

i already had an interview in august (which went well, I THINK). and as for the additional comments section, i didn't bother noting any of the awards i had received, because i think most awards are a load of crap. i did mention that i'm taking math 205 / multivariable calc at the local community college and that i study french independently, though.

i'm applying rd to: columbia, brown, uc berkeley, ucla, reed, and university of washington. but if i get in early action to uchicago, i probably won't bother with applying to the last two.

...if I can get the essay done. Ugh. I wrote all my other essays in a few hours. The UofC essay, though is just...well, I've been procrastinating over it for days.

yeah, i suppose i was really talking about question 4.

i guess i'm just a tad annoyed that there was no one particular question that jerked me out of my chair and left no doubt in my mind that THAT would be the essay topic i'd pick.

Once I actually figured what theme to write on, it wasn't hard at all. It actually came out pretty damn good.

Wow, really intimidating to see the competition for EA.. i'm one myself ;-)..
I have too many extracurriculars that it wont fit, so do i use the supplement box??
check out my thread for my stats, gulps; i'm just curious where i compare to you guys...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!>>>>>>>>>>>>>!!!!!!!!!!!

i'll cry

Physics-- I don't know if this idea will help but--- I remember my S making a grid-type resume of ECs. It was organized in a way that made his stuff easy to absorb .He did not list a ton of things and he kept it to 2 very simple pages. His gc mailed it with the transcript package.

Also remember that Chicago simply cares that you are engaged and doing things that interest you -- highlight what's most important to you.

D is applying EA...still working on her essays!
