Can we come sit in here on Saturday morning and collectively twiddle our thumbs while we wait for our ACT-takers to return? :)

BengalMom ~ I'm sure I will be checking in with you in the morning. What time zone are you in and is your son taking the ACT writing?

I asked S1 what his score goal was and he said "36". I said that's a great goal but since it is very hard to achieve at what score will you be happy and won't want to take it again - so he lowered the score to "34". I'm thinking that if he gets a 32 (along with his other stats -s/b NMSF in our state and is at the top of his class of 200 with honors and AP's) he can be done. He is not planning to apply to highly selective schools. He actually wants to go to Carlson School of Management at the Univ of Minnesota (avg stats for 2008 acceptances were 29 ACT and top 7% of graduating class).

I wish all of the kids luck (and lots of sleep tonight)!

^^mom: to move onto NMF, your S will need to take the SAT....just an fyi

thanks bluebayou ~ I have him signed up for the January SAT ~ he wouldn't take it if it wasn't for the NMF ~ ACT is more prevalent in this part of the country

My son is taking ACT tomorrow and SAT in January. Hopefully, if he does well on the ACT he won't have to worry about the SAT at all!!

mom2010grad, we are in the Mountain time zone, are you in Central? S is taking the writing test also.
Your S has lofty goals, good for him! I hope he does well, along with the other CC kids who will be toiling away tomorrow.
I think I am more nervous than S is!

BengalMom - we are in central time zone so S should be home before your S is done (only takes 10 minutes to get home from the school). I'll let you know how he felt about it. He doesn't seem to be nervous at all ~ which is good. I don't want him to freak out. Fortunately the test starts with his 2 top subjects (English and math) so he can feel good about it before he gets to reading/science (which aren't really hard for him - he just has the slow reading issue).

I need to find something to do tomorrow morning so I'm not stressed about it.

ag54 ~ good luck to your son tomorrow.

Is there a reason it is almost all moms of sons in this forum? Hmmmm .. could it be because if we don't worry for them there won't be any worrying at all :)?

I'm going to go shopping (yikes) in the morning!! Wish me luck on that ;)

After that, I have to go to a luncheon at the sweet old lady's house across the street, so I probably won't be home when my son gets home, probably for the best!

Good luck to all your guys too!!!

mom2010grad - I'm a mom of a D, and I don't think she is too worried either.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do with myself tomorrow morning either. Maybe my 7th grader will distract me.

Good luck to all of you as well.

limomof2 - good luck to your daughter - I knew there had to be a few people that had girls in 1991 (or early 1992).

Oh absolutely. If we moms of sons didn't worry, there wouldn't be any worrying going on whatsoever! We have to do our job. :D

First, they'll do fine. Second , science has nothing to do with science knowledge . It is science reading. Everything you need to answer the q is there. Stop making the questions harder than they are.

But the reason for my posting is :

Don't ever assume or expect a score that is way above the 99th percentile. (Try? Heck,yeah. Just don't be counting on it.;))

Every year I feel compelled to point out the not-so-obvious. http://www.act.org/news/data/08/pdf/two.pdf . (By the numbers) It's a great deal easier to have a National Merit Qualifying score (@ 16,000 per year) than to earn a 34-35-36 on the ACT (9658).

For those who are link-adverse

36 = 428
35 = 2872
34 = 6358

And this is out of 1.4mm (@ the same as NMSQT). Top 10% of the ACT is 140,000 kids. Top 1% is 14,000 kids. A 35 or 36 is the top half of the top half of the top 1%. I'm no math whiz but......let's get this in perspective. Pressure busts pipes. Calm them down.

But remember number 1. They are going to do fine.

It's time for calm . gentle breezes, ponies and bunnies. Good luck to all, and to all a good night. ;)

Thanks, curmudegeon. I'll try to remember the ponies and bunnies. Lol! Maybe we should add a glass of wine to that nice list.... ;)
mom2010grad, too true about the worrying. Good luck to your S tomorrow. Hope he comes home feeling good about it. Mine too!

Good luck to all testers, and if you are in the Northeast with the ice storm, please drive safely!

BengalMom - thanks for the good luck wishes - but my D was born summer of '92! Kids in 11th grade in our area range from 12/91-11/92 (unless their parents held them back or they were held back - but I don't know of any kids like that in her grade).

Thanks for the reality check Curmudgeon - as well as the think calm message - we can use it.

here we are back from our power outage! The good news is our test center is not on the list of rescheduled sites, we dodged a bullet as there are others around us which are closed.

D got to do some more prep today, she has done a practice of all the sections and a couple second practice in a couple sections. She hit a couple math topics she doesn't know, but that was the only new info today other than understanding the pace.

Glad we will have heat and electricity tonight and hope it will go smoothly tomorrow. We are eastern TZ and she is doing writing so early afternoon I can probably post the couple words she shares on how she did.

Just dropped D and her friend off at the h.s. where they're taking the ACT (not their own). Hopefully, it will all work out well for them - they seemed a bit disorganized this morning.

Good luck to all of your kids!

Son has been at the testing center for an hour now. He seemed perfectly fine this morning. Have a great morning everyone.

S didn't seem too thrilled to be up so early this morning. I think he was still peeved I made him come home early last night from an outing with friends. None of them are taking the ACT today.
I noticed on the admission ticket that the test with writing is scheduled to go until 1:00pm. That's over 5 hours he will be there. Groan.

b-mom:

Timing depends on how fast the proctor is, and when they get into their seats, check ID's, read instructions and whether kids vote to skip a break. My kids have gotten out as late as 1:20 and as early as 12:25.

Thanks for the heads-up, bluebayou. Now, I just have to hope that the mom who's picking my D waits for her if she gets out late.
