My counseler told me to only choose private LAC and universities.According to her they most likely to offer you money. What you guys think about that? Also tell me why would you choose private over public?

That is only sometimes true. Mostly, a lot of publics are cheaper than privates. I chose a private (CMU-Tepper) over a public (UVA) because it was the best at what my major is (business/comp finance). They also gave me nice aid but even without the aid I would've chose another private (Stern).

For those states that do not have good public schools (Minnesota or something) a top private is usually preferred if the price isn't too high.

Final answer: Depends on the major, strength of your state's flagships, and finances.

Publics are a great deal in-state. UNC-CH is cheaper than any private school evel out of state (about 10-12K year less, the other publics out of state ate about 2-5K less than privates). Some are less selective (Michigan) than privates of the same caliber. They usually are in fun college towns. Some particular programs are great (UCLA film, Michigan engineering/ business).

That's about it.

Actually the U Minn is a very good school. Does not get the publicity of some others but it has many strengths.

Some students can get more financial aid from privates than from publics. Also, some students simply prefer private universities, whether it be size, prestige, location, x factor, and so forth.

For others, publics are less expensive. They may feel that the quality and experience are as good or even better.

well if private universities offers more aid then it wouldn't be more expensive compared with publics.

It could be. If a private university is 30k tuition, and they offer 10k merit, you still pay 20k. However, if a public is 15k tuition, and you get no aid, you pay 15k. Therefore, even the private with more aid is still more expensive.

U Minn was best in the world in chem e at one time. U of Wis was right up there too. Coincidence?

"It could be. If a private university is 30k tuition, and they offer 10k merit, you still pay 20k. However, if a public is 15k tuition, and you get no aid, you pay 15k. Therefore, even the private with more aid is still more expensive."

Not necessarily, unless you consider public universities strictly in-state. public universities for OOS students could be more expensive than private ones, since their aid pretty much sucks for OOS students.

Private universities are more expensive, they have a bigger budget and therefore can offer more aid. Public universities are cheaper but also some provide few aid because of their budget. However, If you have the grades you can get full rides (or close to it) in both public and private universities.

I'd say it's a matter of each student and the field of study they choose. Going to an expensive private university and paying 120k+ for a psychology/sociology degree, wouldn't be smart at all. But for a business degree or other type of higher-income majors would be worth it.

I am only considering public universities in-state, as it is the only way I would ever attend a public university.

what state are you from?

For in-state publics, the cost of your education will be far less than a private unless you are getting very, very large amounts of financial aid. You can translate that cost advantage into taking extra classes if you are so inclined. My S, for example, is at an in-state public, is a taking grad-level classes in subjects outside his major just because he has an interest..it is cost-viable for him to do that...and I encourage him to do so because these are the years he needs to explore fields that may lead to a lifetime of passion. At a private, it simply would be too expensive to consider these "intellectual diversions"....any many scholarships wouldn't cover them even if you had one.

I'm applying ED to a private school, but the rest of the schools i'm applying to are state schools. My state schools are good, but I will NOT go to Penn State. Temple and Pitt are both fine schools that I would attend.

whats wrong with Penn State?
do you see it as a bad school?

Because every single person from my school goes there, it's party central, its in the middle of nowhere, the kids are jackasses. Done.

i spent a summer at penn state. I loved it. don't hate.

the school (PSU) has a pretty good reputation, i heard.
it would be in top 20 among publics.

Engineers from PSU are well respected
