I thought i’d put this out there.
Why Allegheny College?

bump---------------------------

Allegheny is a school that stresses community. Students are very active in the college community as well as the Meadville community. You will get to know your professors. They are active in campus life so you will see them outside of the classroom as well as inside. The school really values the whole idea of liberal arts so you will not only major in something, but you will have a concentration in an unrelated area as well so you receive a broad education. And Allegheny stresses research. Every student needs to complete a comprehensive senior project in every major.

thanks shennie

My reticent son and I visited Allegheny this past fall for an open house/overnight and, much to my surprise, we were both blown away by many aspects of the school. Although my son had already visited and liked very much both Dickinson and Lafayette, Allegheny was the first school that he actually said (with never seen before enthusiasm!), “I can really see myself going to school here.” I guess that is where the whole idea of “fit” comes into play:)

So many things about the school impressed me but the thing I loved most was that it seems like it offers very challenging academics combined with a very caring and nurturing environment. That sounds cheesy, but seriously - that impression was reinforced over and over throughout the visit by staff, students, the professors he met, and the coach he spoke with.

He’s been accepted, with a nice scholarship, so he’s visiting for a second time later this month – we’ll see then what he thinks about all the snow:)

xmyheart-Allegheny is a great school. I was also really impressed when we visited it by the facilities and the staff. D spent a long time meeting with a professor. He was just great! D got a nice scholarship also, but this school is still the most expensive of all the ones she was accepted at, so it is not likely she will attend. Will wait and see what the final aid package is when we receive it before taking it off the list (reluctantly).

xmyheart (and others) … Do any of you recall when Allegheny notified you after applying RD? DD will soon be sending Allegheny a RD application for Fall 2012 while at the same time sending a EA application to another school (10/1 deadline - 11/15 notification). Her HS college counselor said that Allegheny has been dragging out RD decisions well into the following year. Has that been your experience? I realize that Allegheny has until April 1st to notify but I can’t imagine how they benefit by doing this. DD is not yet ready to apply ED anywhere but might pass up an Allegheny offer if other schools reply sooner. Thanks!

I think d heard in January

Thanks for the reply holliesue. Did your D apply in say, October or November of the previous year? So about 60~90 days after RD application she received her acceptance? Did your D enroll? Thanks, YJ76

She applied by October. Can’t remember exactly when. She did not enroll, primarily because it was her 3rd choice and they gave us the worse financial aid package. We both really liked the school though! Good luck.
