why are swarthmore kids soo weirrrrd?

Weird as in quirky, interested in learning, and maybe a little nerdy? In that case, I think they're quite happy being "weird." I guess it's not for everyone, though.

well i'm not quite sure by what you mean by weird, you have to admit that there are a lot of colloquial definitions. regardless, the general answer would be that any academically talented kid is a little socially awkward and weird, and those that choose Swarthmore, a school that emphasizes intellectualism and learning, are likely to be stranger than those at other selective schools.
Swat is definitely a place where those out of the mainstream in HS come together. It's not a mecca for good looking people, or home to trust fund babies, nor is it a particularly 'hot school'. Most people have never heard of it.

Heredity. Environment.....

I guess it depends on what you mean by "weird".

Some people think it's weird to spend $40,000 a year in elite college tuition and not be fully engaged in challenging academics.

Some people think that drinking 'til you puke as a social activity is weird.

Some people think that an overly homogeneous student body is weird, considering that the number one goal of college is to learn about the world and its people.

Some people think segregated racial/ethnic "theme dorms" are weird.

Like I say, I guess it just all depends on your point of view.
