I noticed that each year Middlebury only allows a minimal (less than 7 or so) number of transfers each academic year?

Is this simply because they are a small school and wish to keep it this way? It seems the chances of successfully transfering into Middlebury is far more difficult than a number of other top colleges and universities.

It's a small school with a high retention rate, so there are very few places that open for transfers.

I think the febs (80-90 or so admitted students who enter in february rather than september in order to compensate for some of large number of students abroad) also fill any available space that might have been granted to transfers.

Yes, Me2's right. About 60% of the junior class goes abroad for either a semester or for a year, so we accept about 100 "Febs" because we have extra beds to fill. And sheetmusic is also right; so few people actually leave, there are few to no spaces for transfers. It depends on the year if they accept transfers.
