Why Colby?

Hey CC, I have some questions for current Colby students or graduate of the school.

  1. Would you have made the same decision to attend Colby College if you could go back in time?
  2. What was your favorite part about the college?
  3. What was your personal favorite activity in college? (aside from academic)
  4. How did your experience at the college help you achieve what you want?

In ten words or less.

I currently attend Colby.

  1. I definitely would because Colby is giving me exactly what could have asked for from a college. I chose Colby over other big names and I don't regret it. Colby
  2. There's so much to like about Colby--the small tight-knit community, all the resources that are available on campus--the list does not end. But what I like the most is everything that I am learning here. I am not only talking about everything I learn in class, but everything that you learn outside, and sometimes those skills end up proving more important. Colby creates the perfect learning environment that I could have asked for.
  3. I started playing a musical instrument after coming here, and I have an amazing teacher who is helping me to improve very fast. I have also started spending a lot of time outdoors. I went hiking or rock-climbing almost every other weekend this fall.
  4. Colby is teaching me the skills that are crucial for success. It is teaching me how to be a better human being without changing my core values, and I think that is a very important skill that I will take away from my college experience.

Thank you for the awesome responses guys! I am now more interested in the school and will definitely apply to Colby:)

@DVDplayer , hope you are still active… great post! Did you learn that instrument as part of a Presidential Scholar’s music scholarship? If so, how was that, and how was the Presidential Scholar’s program overall?

  1. A campus-enhancing, extremely generously funded art museum.
  2. 714 acres (over 3X the size of some peer colleges).
  3. By enrollment, has successfully adhered to the traditional small college model.
  4. Forward-thinking leadership.
  1. Definitely very happy with my choice to go to Colby. I chose this school over another because the people here seem more like the people I wanted to spend the next four years with. So far it has not let me down.
  2. All the organizations and ways to become active on campus with activities
  3. all the volunteering I do! (CCAK, Junior High tutoring, SAT math tutor, etc)
  4. Since I am only a freshman, I am not sure entirely! But the college has already shaped my deep way of thinking and helped me with my goal of grad school

Current senior here, and dreading the day I have to leave Mayflower Hill.

  1. Absolutely. The opportunities I’ve gotten here have been phenomenal and it’ll get better from here for future students. New AC, performing arts center, downtown residence hall, career center - it should be amazing and I wish I was a high school senior coming to colby instead of a college senior leaving.

  2. Yes, it’s cliche, but the community here is top notch. Everyone wants to help each other out and be supportive. I also love how receptive the campus is to new ideas for events and other cool things.

  3. Favorite activity is probably Colby-Bowdoin hockey game. It’s ridiculous how packed the rink is with Colby (present and past).

  4. The experience has definitely helped shape my interests, both academic and career aspirations wise. Came in with specific majors and minor in mind, leaving with completely different disciplines.

@Postmodern Sorry for the late reply. I hope this is still relevant. Yes, I am learning the new instrument as a part of the music scholarship, and it is going well. I realised that music department offers a lot of classes that I am interested in and I am planning on taking these over the next few years. This is great because I discovered a new area of interest – something I might not have done had I not been a presidential scholar. The presidential scholars program worked out really well for me and most of the other scholars I know. You get to help a professor with their research, which is a huge opportunity, especially as a freshman. It allows you to learn a lot in any area that you might be interested in, and also lets you build a strong relationship with a professor, which can be helpful later. They also offer a few thousand dollars which you can use at any point over the four years. Although I haven’t used mine yet, some scholars in the past have used the fund to conduct independent research projects, finance unpaid internships, attend conferences – the possibilities are endless. Hope this helps!

@newport28 Hi newport28, the documentary that you have linked to in your comment present some interesting perspectives on Colby life. It is important to keep in mind that each student attending any educational institution will have distinct experiences and a lot of it depends on the expectations and the outlook with which you approach college life. It is easy to get bogged down with a lot of work in academically rigorous institutions, but if any student makes the slightest effort to be involved in the community both inside and outside the classroom and on and off campus, they usually do not have problems to fit into the community and have a memorable college experience. This documentary made me apprehensive about Colby’s campus climate while I was trying to decide between different schools that I was accepted into. However, I realised that there was nothing to be worried about when I got here. I am not saying this because I am a Colby student myself, but I feel that Colby has an inclusive and welcoming community. So if the documentary is something you are worried about, rest assured that most people on campus do not feel as isolated as some people in the documentary do.

Yes, @DVDplayer , it is helpful thank you very much! It sounds like a great program.

@DVDplayer I feel the exact same way

Hey, I am a Colby '21 … question do you get paid to tutor SAT math? I’ve scored a perfect score on the Math section of the new and old SAT.

Top LAC, research ops, global perspective, tightly-- knit community, blueberry ice cream (ok 11)
