ack I know I'm pushing the ED deadline here, but is there any way to include a longer 'why columbia' answer? I've finally pared it down to 622 characters; the online app only allows 400 (50 x 8 lines).

I've heard of people their answers to the 'additional information' section, with a quick note to see this section in the 'why columbia' bit. Has anyone done this / would it be ok?
I was also thinking of spilling over onto the SEAS question's lines (I'm applying to CC) - would this be better?
Or if none of the above woudl work, anyone willingto read my answer/ any tips on how to further edit it?

I just applied yesterday ED (I LOVE COLUMBIA) and I also had trouble with this section. I applied paper and I typed it on the computer just so I knew what I was going to write; I had about 550 characters without spaces so mine was much longer than the online application allows. It was really frustrating, because I only got to express the few main reasons I wanted to go to Columbia, but none of the many other smaller reasons. I guess I would just write the most important things and leave the less important things out, such as mentioning the core, the fact that it is in New York, diversity, etc. Those are all implied, because you are applying there, they want to know the specifics, so for instance, I talked about the major I am interested in, the music department, some extracurriculars they offer, and how that all connects to what I do now. I wouldn't stress, but I know how you feel. I wouldn't suggest adding more than they want, because they will not be inclined to read supplementary information for a question that is supposed to be short and to the point. If you want me to read what you have, I will.

It's not actually 400, the first line allows about 50, and the other 7 allows about 75. I got my essay to about 480 characters w/o spaces. Like joey I didn't mention things like the core, NYC, or diversity, because I agree, they are implied. I basically talked about how I was head over heels for this one professor (in an academic way, fools).

If you want me to take a look to see where you can cut down, I'd love to.

yes! i just discovered the 75 on second line thing as I was sadly transferring my brutally hacked passage from word onto the online app. And with a teeny bit of editing, it fit so yay for that. I did mention nyc and the core (indirectly,a specific class in it) in passing but I guess it should be okay, theyarea big partof why I want to go there. I should probably go and edit Julliard back in though, seeing as I put it as my first major choice in the application part 1, eek. Or would this not matter?
Thanks for offering to read though, joeypiano and cannednish, and good luck with your own apps!

i wrote a bulleted list, i assumed that was what was implied by the separate lines. should that be ok, or am i out of line (no pun intended ha ha ha)?

My S wrote a paragraph, but it was really a list ending in a summing up sentence. (Was accepted). It wasn't particularly inspired either; I wouldn't stress over it too much.
