I wanted to get some input on why some people chose Columbia over other great schools that may have offered admission to them(any other Ivy/any other top school). Although these are two completely different areas of study, I am looking into completing a pre-med major or an international relations major. I'm a rising senior in high school. I would greatly appreciate any comments because they will help me decide on whether or not I should apply depending on if Columbia is a good fit for what I want to study.

i’m going to be a freshman at columbia this fall and i’m interested in IR. though you can’t major in IR, per se, you can major in polisci and concentrate in IR. columbia has a fabulous graduate school for IR—SIPA (School of International and Public Affairs)—which you can take courses in as an undergraduate. also, nyc is arguably the most international city in the world. if you’re interested in IR, you’d not only have an awesome curriculum at columbia but also the opportunity to really enrich your sense of global culture and cooperation amongst different types of people. this is probably the reason why i chose columbia over georgetown SFS (one of the best in the country), plus the fact that i live 40 minutes outside of DC already.

can’t say much about med, but columbia does have very good sciences and i’ve heard it has a very good med school.
