Why did I get rejected from Berkeley?

@cayton @bomerr‌ I was always telling my daughter that if I applied to Berkeley now I would never get in. She finally told me to stop saying that because it was annoying her. :-S
But very true - all of my friends who went to UCB have said the same thing. By the same token, UC Merced will only go up.

@Cayton Do you think bomerr was unsunghero1?

Up in what, ratings? I got into UCM but after attending UCI I will 100% not attend. I don’t think the ratings will go up because admissions is getting more selective but the quality of education doesn’t reflect that.

I think it will for sure. Definitely it should rise above Riverside which I guess hovers where it is due to its crummy location. Irvine has developed a great strategy of enticing high-achieving Asians. I believe Irvine will keep going up.
Davis was the pits when I was at Berkeley - considered Cow Town. Really at the bottom. My daughter got offered a $14,000 regents to Merced. It came out of nowhere. No other campus offered her anything. Obviously an incentive to entice ppl over. Pretty good strategy. All they need is one top dept, a couple stellar professors. And I guess freshmen who don’t get in to their campuses are offered Merced.

I don’t think he was unsunghero1. He just “liked” his comments.

“Irvine has developed a great strategy of enticing high-achieving Asians”

That is exactly why it won’t go up. The Uni has no soul, it will never develop the type of grass-roots pride that’ll keep the alumni donating nor will it generate enough successful alumni to begin with. It’ll always be out shadowing by it’s brothers, UCLA and Cal, and at the same time it suffers the same problems as those schools because it’s also mega public.

I don’t think the UCs are up and coming. I’d place my bets on the smaller privates, SCU, Pepperdine, LMU, Chapman, CMC (altho it’s already pretty prestigious) etc.

@CollegeDropout1

Maybe. Maybe not. :-/

i disagree regarding Chapman Pepperdine, LMU etc. We will agree to disagree. ;:wink:

@bomerr, there is no school like USC for alumni network. You’ve got it made, enjoy your college. Regarding the UCs, most UC alumni do not donate much to there alma mater, I don’t think it’s UCI alone. For example, I know a very successful lawyer graduated from UCLA undergraduate and UCB law school, he made millions in salary back in the 80s, I would categorize him as successful but when I googled him recently, he donated only $5000 to UCB Law school. That’s a pittance for him.
