Why do ibanks care about Ivy brandname so much?

Yup, agreed.

realize something guys… this is coming from hmom… a hardened investment banking woman. I seriously doubt she was the one being chased after by the Wharton guys.

Not even 22-28 (est.) year old guys think like this. Banker friend tells me that his analyst and associate acquaintances have NYU’s freshmen welcome week circled on their calendars.

I asked him if Columbia got the same treatment. He said no. And it’s not even like NYU’s “talent” is top tier either, which doesn’t bode well for Columbia.

Too bad UBS LA was too busy back in the day to be concerned with USC and UCLA… but I’m sure that’s since changed now that Moelis et al., are gone. They must have a field day every late August/early September.

It’s one thing to disagree with her on a particular point, but it seems odd that everyone likes attacking one of the more informative posters in the IB forum…

I love it!

The number of Wharton grads who marry each other is startling. This seems true of all ivies anecdotally to me. And it seems even more true among my young employees. But you’re correct, no Wharton guy would have me and I was forced into an arranged marriage to a Stanford guy whose family liked the dowry. It’s been torture for him, but hopefully the smart kids take some of the pain away.

Clearly hard to imagine for some, but many guys actually figure out young that their intellectual peers will make the best partners. Not to mention that there are many, many beautiful women on WS. The beauty is disarming and they are often underestimated. Of course in my own case the 200 hour hard driving weeks resulted in my looking 60 at 30 and all the great meals billed to clients can be seen around my waist.

This is truly disturbing and pathetic. While I appreciate that many young bankers sow their wild oats with models and other beautiful women, going after college freshmen would lose them all respect where I come from. Bad enough for an analyst but an associate circling freshmen week needs a long mental health break.

Apologies to MC, unnecessarily condescending of me.

Accepted, Pure.

Do you really blame them?

I mean take a step back and look at all their options…

While there are models and beautiful women, they are few and far between. There are far less models and beautiful women to go around than the number of bankers for sure.

Would you really want to date a co-worker as an ibanker? Chances are she’s in her 20s but looks like she’s in her upper 40s or worse with the number of hours she works per week.

That’s where you’re wrong Polo, very, very wrong. This should help:

that was an amazing response

It’s all a matter of perspective and standards. Have you ever thought that the woman who posted that ad really isn’t good looking at all? Can you produce a couple photographs and stats (physical - not her SAT scores, etc.) so we can judge for ourselves? Maybe she has an unrealistically inflated view of herself? People tend to think like that.

Of my graduating class of 800, I believe about 20-25 students are going into ibanking. Of my entire high school with a student body of 3000, maybe 15 are what I consider beautiful and have the looks to become a model. The sample sizes are sufficient to make the conclusion that there are far less models and beautiful women to go around than the number of bankers.

The point is that you can’t really blame ibankers for targeting college freshman. The women ibankers look like they are in their 40s when they are only in their 20s because that is the product of working 80+ hour weeks and there just aren’t enough beautiful women to go around.

And one thing to remember is that these self-proclaimed “beautiful” women aren’t looking for “bankers” specifically…

You just have to make the bills. However way you want to is up to you.

From what I read, many models do not eat well, ie have eating disorders, so that they can remain very thin. Many, so the media says, use drugs and/or smoking to remain thin and just for fun. And, from what I read, models have long hours traveling many miles and the stress level is high…

So how come bad nutrition, drug use and long hours do not make models look 40+ when they are only in their 20’s??

In other words, I do not really think you know what you are talking about.

Wow. Where to begin?

1) While some models resort to extreme measures (starvation, binging, self-purging, etc.) to stay thin, many do it the healthy way through proper diet and rigorous exercise. Nutritionists and personal trainers are nowadays part of a model’s entourage. Yes, I read tabloids.

2) Drugs and smoking do not help you lose weight. If anything they are counterproductive to weight loss. That’s basic science.

3) Sure, models travel a lot and stress is high. But they also have these things called spas and masseuses, salons and beauty parlors. Retail therapy also does the trick.

I don’t think you are, but if somehow you’re insinuating that models and female bankers are on the same level of attractiveness, you’re delusional. Models, by job description, spend their time working out and perfecting their look. Bankers, also by job description, spend their time in the office, correcting the third draft of a prospectus for a cross-exchange IPO, while ordering take-out and (yet again) skimping on that 9pm yoga class at the nearby gym.

you clearly don’t know what you’re talking about.

if you don’t think a diet of meth and cigarettes will let you drop 50 pounds in a few weeks, you’re just uninformed or ignorant.

amphetamines and cigarettes are not counterproductive to weight loss and THAT is basic science.

You get an “A” for logic fail.
Models are “models” because they look good period. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out this statement is true: attractiveness - models > female ibankers.

If you think a “diet of meth” will make you drop weight AND look good to become a model, you’re seriously misinformed. Amphetamines and cigarettes are counterproductive to healthy weight loss and that’s basic fitness.

No you’re right. I meant losing weight to be fit. Meth and crack abusers are definitely skinny, but also sickly pale and just unhealthy looking. Obviously, models aren’t going to be choosing that over proper diet and exercise. See: Kate Moss’ fall from grace.

Polo–you did not address what I said. How come 20 yr old investment banking women look old in their 20’s vs models? This is given they, investment bking women, start out being attractive.

So, you are suggesting all investment banking women are unattractive?

And wow PureAdvisory

How incredibly sad. Do you not think beautiful women can be smart?

Oh and, BTW, haha, loved the Craigs Lists entry.

morrismm, please don’t put words in my mouth. I hate that more than anything else in the world.

You either can’t read or you like to deliberately take things out of context and manipulate it to mean a certain thing – neither of which are beneficial to this thread.

+1.

I’m getting the feeling that there’s more than a few insecure female ibankers here that realized that no matter how hard they work they can’t get around the simple fact that men always place great value on looks. They have and always will lose out to those other popular gorgeous girls they knew back in HS that didn’t have such ambitious life plans.

But that’s besides the point…

What is there to address? Sure there may be a few attractive ibanking women around (not that I have seen any), but as a male, I’m going to go where I will get the greatest average return on my efforts and in that case I’m surely not going to look for that in the female ibanker population.
If you think otherwise, that’s great. I really don’t care and I don’t think anyone else does either. We’re men and we’re born to go after the best looking females and if you’re not one of them tough ****. The sooner you realize that the easier life will be for you.
