Why do people drink alcohol?

Good times, eh?

:)

Sorry, I didn't mean to use the word "children" as a derogatory term or anything. PEOPLE. whatever.

And people have drank and stuff for hundreds of years.

The differences lie in how culture perceives it and addresses it. Differences in how many people do it compared to how many do it in excess, differences in what people do about it, etc.

The discussion of the pleasures of drunknness reminds me of the posts of a former CC member named Lucifer (with a few numbers after his name). He was a stellar h.s. student from St. Louiswho admitted to drinking heavily. He bragged that his very heavy drinking didn't stop him from going to Cornell, and despite parents here (including an ER doctor) warning him that he was putting his life at risk, he insisted that he was fine because he had good grades and good friends who would take care of him when he was too intoxicated to take care of himself.

In March, 2006, Lucifer died of an alcohol overdose while visiting a friend at University of Virginia.

Apparently, his posts have been pulled from cc, but if you Google, you can find news stories in the U Va., Cornell and St. Louis newspapers that even quote from his CC posts.

I'm not listing his real name or full College Confidential name here because I think that might be against college confidential's rules even though he's dead.

If you're really interested, this is a fairly interesting read about the cycles of alcohol use: http://www.indiana.edu/~engs/articles/kb.html

Sorry to hear that. Keep in mind not all people who drink are "very heavy drinkers".

A reminder to follow College Confidential's terms of service, which you can find under FAQ above left of your screen.

I have deleted several posts and warned several posters about using profanity (no profanity including so-called mild profanity or spelled around profanity is allowed here), slurs against homosexuals, and flames.

It's fine to disagree with others, but confine your disagreements to others' opinions. Don't make negative statements about the characters of people with whom you disagree.

Those who violate our terms of service risk having their posting privileges terminated or suspended.

If our TOS are not followed here, this thread will be closed.

drinking is like football at a big state school...the majority like it and attend games while a minority don't enjoy the game, don't participate, and make fun of those who are crazy about a game...do what you enjoy doing and if that doesn't include drinking then so be it no one cares...people should only care if you become a raging alcoholic/junkie and seriously endanger your health

Thanks for the post Northstarmom, I'm very sorry to hear about what happened. It serves as a warning for all of us to exercise caution and good judgment when consuming alcohol, and to heed the warnings of those that know better (and perhaps to exercise some discretion when posting about such activities). But I still think it's important to distinguish between individuals who make it a habit of drinking heavily (as was the case with Lucifer) and those that occasionally drink in moderation.

A very sad story nonetheless :(

Hmm. Might be nature's way of asserting herself, see:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natural_selection

Okay, I'm only half kidding.

Why do people play video games? Or do anything voluntarily? They enjoy it. Simple, eh?

Edit -- firewalker: Ouch.

Whether or not you choose to drink, please take the time to read this so that all of you know the signs of alcohol poisoning. Lucifer's friends thought that they were doing enough when they put him to bed to sleep off his drunkenness. Unfortunately, that can be a death sentence for someone who is exhibiting ANY of the below symptoms. It's better to overreact and call 911 than to have a dead friend.

"Critical Signs for Alcohol Poisoning

Mental confusion, stupor, coma, or person cannot be roused.
Vomiting.
Seizures.
Slow breathing (fewer than eight breaths per minute).
Irregular breathing (10 seconds or more between breaths).
Hypothermia (low body temperature), bluish skin color, paleness.
What Should I Do If I Suspect Someone Has Alcohol Poisoning?
Know the danger signals.
Do not wait for all symptoms to be present.
Be aware that a person who has passed out may die.
If there is any suspicion of an alcohol overdose, call 911 for help. Don't try to guess the level of drunkenness.
What Can Happen to Someone With Alcohol Poisoning That Goes Untreated?
Victim chokes on his or her own vomit.
Breathing slows, becomes irregular, or stops.
Heart beats irregularly or stops.
Hypothermia (low body temperature).
Hypoglycemia (too little blood sugar) leads to seizures.
Untreated severe dehydration from vomiting can cause seizures, permanent brain damage, or death."

College life revolves around drinking because its fun and social. A way to blow off steam from school work. Around here id say the majority of the campus starts drinking at 8pm on thursday and doesnt stop until sunday night

Ok a few things need to be addressed.

Yes, people use alcohol as a way of lowering their inhibitions in order to be more sociable. However, this does not mean that this "pleasure" is achieved by consuming so much alcohol that they are vomiting or "blacking out."

Some of you people please get off your moral high horses and realize there is a clear distinction between those who drink with the purpose of blacking out and those who drink moderately or to get "tipsy" whether it be every other week or every Friday and Saturday.

If you don't know your limits yet drink slowly and stay away from multiple shots. You'll eventually realize when you're reaching your max.

Good Day.

I just can't understand or relate to all the self-righteous kids on CC who get aroused over studying and abhor anyone who gets drunk or likes to drink regularly while in college. Get over yourselves. I love to drink and will continue to do so while I'm in college because once I get out into the real world I'm not going to be able to party as hard.

It makes me said because threads like this just reinforce my thinking that CCers as a whole are uptight, self righteous, condescending nerds.

ahahaha titcr.

This is cc, ya know?

You know that story about Lucifer Northstarmom was talking about. He was in a group on facebook that's message is eerily similar to what you just wrote. It's name is: "Enjoy it now because after college it's called alcoholism."

I'm not suggesting that you party too hard or that you're an alcoholic or anything like that. It was just so weird for me to read the article about his death and then see your statement.

Arctic16, let us hope that you don't end up in a body bag in some coroner's office.

:p

Enjoy it while it lasts because after college, it's called alcoholism

hotpiece beat me to it :(

ahahahaha

180.
