I have been planning to go to FIU, but now I have been thinking about going to UF. The thing is FIU is more convinient for me as I live in Miami. Is it really worth moving to Gainsville to go to school? I have a 4.0 gpa in cc and will be getting my aa in two more semesters. I know UF has a much higher ranked business program, which is what I want to study.

In general, I believe that you should go to the highest “ranked” school you can get into, and push yourself.

That being said, I know two girls who went to FIU for their undergraduate, and then got into medical school and pharmacy school for graduate school.

And when I was a kid, I had a friend who went to SUNY Cortland, and got into medical school, and I had another friend who went to SUNY Oneonta, but then went to the University of Wisconsin for graduate school.

So the prestige of your undergraduate school is not necessarily critical.

Further, academics can only take you so far. I know someone who was an MIT graduate, and is living in a trailer park.

An “overqualiified” kid who goes to FIU for financial reasons, and/or because they don’t want to leave home in Miami, can still get into a good graduate school if he/she gets good grades at FIU, and repeats his/her good standardized test scores when he takes the LSAT, GMAT, GRE, or MCAT (which is likely). In fact, the “A” student at FIU may get in easier than a “B” student at University of Miami.

I had an old girlfriend who went to NYU, but got involved in drugs, and drinking, and stopped going to classes. Some kids need parental supervision while attending college.

And let us not forget that the kid who goes to FIU will not be paying $50,000 a year to go to college, like some kids do.

I hope you are kidding !

There are many reasons why someone might choose FIU, let’s not put the school down. No, it’s definitely not in the same caliber as UF or FSU in the state of Florida, but it is up and coming in it’s own right. Just give it time to flourish and create it’s own identity academically.

Not kidding so excuse my ignorance buddy. I have always heard FIU has a good business program so it was pretty much a forgone conclusion that I would go there. But looking at the rankings and overall prestige of UF has me reconsidering. Just wondering if it really is that much of a difference between the two as far overall career starting salaries, advancement, job placement, graduate school acceptance etc.

yes. you will make more money coming out of UF than you will out of FIU if you were to apply yourself equally at both schools. there is no question about that.

People go there because it is way cheaper. It’s that simple. A close family member of mine got into Harvard and UPenn for business but ended up going to FIU for International Business because of the cost. However, he is actually extremely well off now. It’s what you make of the opportunities after graduation that matter the most.
